1. Anthracyclines : Toxicity and chemotherapy-induced mucositis
Abstract : Anthracyclines belong to a class of cytostatic compounds that are commonly used to treat various types of cancers, including lymphoma, breast cancer and primary liver cancer. The aim of this thesis was to study how two anthracyclines, doxorubicin and idarubicin, induced cytotoxicity in tumor cells, as well as their off-target effect on the gastrointestinal system. 2. Enzymatic Reduction of Ketones
Abstract : Methods have been studied for the production of chiral alcohols, which are of importance in organic synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agro-chemicals and fragrances, etc., through the enzymatic or microbial reduction of ketones. READ MORE

3. Pharmacology and resistance mechanisms of nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase II interactive agents : studies on human leukemia cells with a focus on cross-resistance
Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to elucidate mechanisms of action and resistance of clinically relevant nucleoside analogues and topoisomerase interactive agents in human leukemia cell lines and leukernia cells isolated from peripheral blood of leukemia patients. Interactions and cross-resistance patterns of these different cytotoxic drug families were also studied since these drugs are usually administrated in combination in the clinic. READ MORE

4. Synthesis of Organic Compounds for Nuclide Therapy : Derivatives of Carboranes, 9-Aminoacridine and Anthracyclines
Abstract : This thesis addresses the synthesis of organic compounds, some of them are derivatives of compounds with DNA binding properties, for potential use in targeted nuclide therapy. The compounds synthesized therefore also need to contain potent nuclides. READ MORE

5. Anthracycline pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics in acute myeloid leukemia
Abstract : The goal of this thesis has been to study pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of anthracyclines in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with the ultimate goal to improve chemotherapy: 1. By studying the relation between daunorubicin (DNR) and idarubicin (IDA) uptake in vitro and in vivo and apoptosis in vitro in leukemic cells isolated from patients with AML. READ MORE
