  1. 16. Phage–derived Endolysins as Potential Antibacterials : A Study of Peptidoglycan Hydrolase and Mycolylarabinogalactan Esterase Enzymes

    Author : Adel Abouhmad; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antibacterial; Endolysin; Nanocrystals; Immobilization; Mycolylarabinogalactan esterase;

    Abstract : Bacteriophages, or phages, are viruses that infect bacteria, at the end of their life cycle produce a set of enzymes called endolysins to lyse host cells from within, facilitating the release of the viral progeny. Due to their lytic activity, endolysins have gained great interest as potential antibacterials targeting both Gram–positive and –negative bacteria, especially in the actual context of increasing rates of antibiotics resistance. 2. 17. Synthesis of substituted Ring-Fused 2-Pyridones and applications in chemical biology

    Author : Christoffer Bengtsson; Fredrik Almqvist; Paul Helquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Synthesis; 2-pyridone; 2-thiazoline; cross coupling; pili; curli; antibacterial; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : Antibiotics have been extensively used to treat bacterial infections since Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin 1928. Disease causing microbes that have become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy are an increasing public health problem. READ MORE

  3. 18. Development of New Bacteria-Reducing Surfaces

    Author : Josefin Illergård; Monica Ek; Lars Wågberg; Eva Blolmberg; Ute Römling; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; antibacterial; polyelectrolyte multilayers; polyvinylamine; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Abstract : In recent years, antibacterial surfaces have been a subject of increased interest. Especiallyinteresting are non-leaching, contact-active surfaces that physically disrupts the bacterialcell using immobilised cationic polymers. Thus the risks of bacterial resistance and discharge of hazardous biocides is minimised. READ MORE

  4. 19. Bioactive Compounds in the Chemical Defence of Marine Sponges : Structure-Activity Relationships and Pharmacological Targets

    Author : Erik Hedner; Lars Bohlin; Per R Jonsson; Raffaele Riccio; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Pharmacognosy; 5-hydroxytryptamine; agelasine; agelasimine; antibacterial; antifouling; barettin; bromobenzisoxazolone barettin; cytotoxic; marine; secondary metabolite; sponge; Farmakognosi; Agelas; Geodia barretti;

    Abstract : Marine invertebrates, in particular sponges, represent a source of a wide range of secondary metabolites, many of which have been attributed various defensive capabilities against environmental stress factors. In this thesis sponge-derived low-molecular peptide-like compounds and associated analogs are investigated for bioactivity and pharmacological targets. READ MORE

  5. 20. Bio-based preparation of nanocellulose and functionalization using polyelectrolytes

    Author : Jonatan Henschen; Monica Ek; Josefin Illergård; Dongfang Li; Emily Cranston; KTH; []
