  1. 36. Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic modeling and prediction of antibiotic effects

    Author : David D. Khan; Lena Friberg; Hartmut Derendorf; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacometrics; Pharmacokinetics; Pharmacodynamics; PKPD modeling; ciprofloxacin; colistin; E. coli; antibiotics; time-kill experiments; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Problems of emerging antibiotic resistance are becoming a serious threat worldwide, and at the same time, the interest to develop new antimicrobials has declined. There is consequently a need for efficient methods to develop new treatments that minimize the risk of resistance development and that are effective on infections caused by resistant strains. 2. 37. Molecular characterisation of antibiotic resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis

    Author : Pontus Juréen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : To counteract the emergence of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) a number of approaches have been proposed, amongst which are the sound usage of the present anti-TB drugs and the development of prompt and specific tools for the diagnosis of resistance. To examine the role of drugs in the treatment of resistant TB, we investigated the general crossresistance between kanamycin and amikacin, which has been reported in numerous studies. READ MORE

  3. 38. Antibiotic Resistance and Population Dynamics of Escherichia coli in Relation to a Large Scale Antibiotic Consumption Intervention

    Author : Martin Sundqvist; Otto Cars; Gunnar Kahlmeter; Dan I Andersson; Jordi Vila; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Antibiotic resistance challenges the practice and development of modern medicine. The aim of this thesis was to test the hypothesis that antibiotic resistance is reversible once the selection pressure of an antibiotic is removed. READ MORE

  4. 39. Use of rhizobacteria for the alleviation of plant stress

    Author : Islam Ahmed Moustafa Abd El-Daim; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria are beneficial microbes able to induce plant stress tolerance and antagonise plant pathogens. The present study showed that wheat seedlings pre-treated with Bacillus thuringiensis AZP2 had better tolerance to severe drought stress and showed 78% greater plant biomass and five-fold higher survivorship compared to wheat seedlings not treated with the bacterium. 5. 40. Ecological impact of antibiotic treatment on human normal microflora

    Author : Mamun-Ur Rashid; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Ceftobiprole;

    Abstract : The skin and the mucosal surfaces of humans are colonized with microorganisms which are often referred as the normal microflora. There is a biological balance between the human host and the normal microflora in health. The extensive use of antibiotics in both humans and animals has caused the development of many resistant bacteria. READ MORE
