  1. 16. On antidepressant effects of running and SSRI : focus on hippocampus and striatal dopamine pathways

    Author : Astrid Bjørnebekk; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Depression; exercise; neuropeptides; cell proliferation; neurogenesis; NPY; BDNF; Flinders Sensitive Line;

    Abstract : Considering the heterogeneous character of depression, it seems likely that many brain regions are involved mediating the diverse symptoms of depression. For example, the mesolimbic DA system has a central function for motivational behaviors and pleasure seeking, and it is possible that malfunctioning of brain reward systems could be an underlying mechanism of the anhedonia experienced in depressive illness. 2. 17. Utility of combined treatment with antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs : scientific rationales and clinical implications

    Author : Carl Björkholm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The atypical antipsychotic drug (APD) clozapine is the most efficacious APD in treatment-resistant schizophrenia including negative symptoms and cognitive impairment, and still lacks extrapyramidal side effects (EPS). Clozapine, which also possesses an antidepressant effect and can be used as monotherapy in bipolar disorder, has a broad receptor binding profile with higher affinity for the α2-adrenoceptor and several serotonergic receptors than D2 receptor, enhances dopamine output in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and facilitates glutamatergic NMDA receptor-mediated transmission in pyramidal cells in the same brain region. 3. 18. Mind and body exercises : associations with mental health, antidepressant medication, autonomic functioning and inflammatory biomarkers

    Author : Lina Rådmark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Stress, depression and stress-related mental ill-health are common in societies all over the world, and people tend to use both conventional care within the health care system and complementary treatment methods to handle the related symptoms. Still, there is sparse information on whether, how and when to combine these different treatment modalities, in spite of their relatively widespread use. READ MORE

  4. 19. Antidepressant drug effects in vivo: Focus on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic responses in different experimental paradigms

    Author : Cecilia Wikell; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; portacaval shunt; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; hepatic encephalopathy; enantiomers; drug safety; drug disposition; citalopram; antidepressants; brain microdialysis; behaviour; venlafaxine; Pharmacological sciences; pharmacognosy; pharmacy; toxicology; Farmakologi; farmakognosi; farmaci; toxikologi;

    Abstract : Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic activities of the antidepressants venlafaxine (VEN) and citalopram (CIT) were investigated in the portacaval shunted (PCS) rat, a model of chronic hepatic encephalopathy (HE), and normal/control rats. The levels of VEN in serum and brain were higher in PCS rats than in controls after a single injection and chronic treatment with VEN (10 mg/kg). READ MORE

  5. 20. Modulation of angiogenesis in adult rat brain - effect of aging, stress, environmental enrichment and antidepressant treatment

    Author : Joakim Ekstrand; Enheten för psykiatrisk neuromodulering (PNU); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; corticosterone; enrichment; electroconvulsive seizures; Angiogenesis; neurogenesis;

    Abstract : Neurogenesis and angiogenesis are stimulated by a number of antidepressant treatments, and cellular plasticity has emerged as a phenomenon with great relevance to the etiology and treatment of depression. In paper I we characterize how ECS-induced endothelial cell proliferation leads to vascularization of the adult rat hippocampus. READ MORE
