  1. 1. Early assessment of efficacy and safety of novel anticoagulants as exemplified by direct thrombin inhibitors. Non-clinical pharmacodynamic studies in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Margareta Elg; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; animals; antidote; bleeding; inhibition constant; inogatran; association rate constant; melagatran; thrombin inhibitor; thrombosis; fibrinolysis;

    Abstract : The drawbacks of today's anticoagulants are parenteral use (heparins), a narrow interval between efficacy and bleeding, and the high variability of effect with a consequent need for frequent monitoring (coumarins). The aim of the current studies was to evaluate properties important for efficacy and safety of novel anticoagulants, as exemplified by direct thrombin inhibitors, with non-clinical methods. 2. 2. Exploring non-covalent interactions between drug-like molecules and the protein acetylcholinesterase

    Author : Lotta Berg; Anna Linusson; Fredrik Ekström; Joel L. Sussman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; acetylcholinesterase; drug discovery; density functional theory; hydrogen bond; nerve-agent antidote; non-covalent interaction; protein-ligand complex; structure-based design; thermodynamics; X-ray crystallography; datorlingvistik; computational linguistics;

    Abstract : The majority of drugs are small organic molecules, so-called ligands, that influence biochemical processes by interacting with proteins. The understanding of how and why they interact and form complexes is therefore a key component for elucidating the mechanism of action of drugs. READ MORE

  3. 3. Design strategies for new drugs targeting multicomponent systems : focusing on class II MHC proteins and acetylcholinesterase

    Author : Cecilia Lindgren; Anna Linusson; Antti Poso; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; acetylcholinesterase; class II MHC protein; drug design; molecular dynamics simulation; multicomponent system; nerve agent; oxime; quantitative structure-activity relationship; reactivator; rheumatoid arthritis; statistical molecular design; T-cell receptor;

    Abstract : The field of medicinal chemistry is constantly evolving. Aided by advances within techniques as well as knowledge of biological systems, increasingly complex targets and drugs can be considered. READ MORE

  4. 4. Flotation-REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique) in the age of anxiety : Exploring the role and treatment applications of sensory isolation in the modern world

    Author : Kristoffer Jonsson; Anette Kjellgren; Torsten Passie; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; Flotation-REST; Sensory isolation; Sensory deprivation; Anxiety; Generalized anxiety disorder; Complementary and alternative medicine; Flyt-REST; sinnes-isolation; sensorisk deprivation; generaliserat ångest syndrom; komplementär och alternativ medicin; Psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : Anxiety and the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), such as flotation-REST, have increased markedly during the last decades. Anxiety is reportedly a prevalent incentive for the use of CAMs, despite the present low state of knowledge about their safety and efficacy. READ MORE

  5. 5. Management of hemorrhagic complications associated with antithrombotic therapy

    Author : Ammar Majeed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Anticoagulants are used for the prevention and treatment of arterial and venous thromboembolism. Such therapy is always associated with an increased risk of bleeding. Intracranial hemorrhage is the most serious form of anticoagulantsrelated bleeding and caries a high mortality rate. READ MORE
