  1. 11. Genetic and antigenic characterisation of Puumala virus in voles and man

    Author : Jan Hörling; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The present study has focused on the genetic and antigenic characteristics of Puumala (PUU) virus, the causative agent of nephropathia epidemica (NE). An assay for detection of neutralising antibodies to PUU virus was developed. READ MORE

  2. 12. Variable surface molecules of the plasmodium falciparum infected erythrocyte and merozoite

    Author : Malin Haeggström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : P.falciparum; infected erythrocytes; transport; Maurer s clefts; antigenic variation; PfEMP1; RIFIN; SURFIN; merozoites; subgroups;

    Abstract : As Plasmodium falciparum parasites matures within the infected erythrocyte (IE) it produces a number of various proteins, which are transported out to the cell surface where they are exposed to the host immune system. To avoid recognition and elimination by the liver and spleen these proteins can undergo antigenic variation, a phenomenon where the parasites switch from expressing one variant to' another, both belonging to the same gene-family. 3. 13. Pursuing the fever trail : pathogenesis of blood-stage P. falciparum malaria and pregnancy

    Author : Niloofar Rasti; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Plasmodium falciparum; malaria; erythrocytes; pregnancy; Uganda; placental sequestration; cytoadhesion; PfEMP1; var2csa; antigenic variation; live-cell proteomic.;

    Abstract : The burden of the most virulent form of human malarias, Plasmodium falciparum, is concentrated among young children and pregnant women in sub-Saharan Africa. Excessive sequestration of parasite-infected red blood cells (pRBCs) in the capillary beds of different organs is the hallmark of P. READ MORE

  4. 14. Variant antigens at the infected red cell surface in Plasmodium falciparum malaria

    Author : Victor Fernandez; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Plasmodium falciparum; blood stages; variant antigens; var PfEMP1; rif RIFIN; adhesive phenotypes; cytoadherence; endothelial receptor; PECAM-1 CD31; rosetting; heparan sulphate;

    Abstract : Disease severity in Plasmodium falciparum infections is, to a large extent, a consequence of the parasite's efficient escape from die human host defences. Sequestration and antigenic variation are two evasion mechanisms featured by P.falciparum. READ MORE

  5. 15. In silico analysis of Treponema and Brachyspira genomes : assembly, annotation and phylogeny

    Author : Mamoona Mushtaq; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Spirochaetal bacteria are highly diverse in terms of life style, growth requirements and virulence, but they all belong to a monophyletic ancient lineage. Many spirochaetes are difficult to culture or have fastidious growth requirements. READ MORE
