  1. 1. Pressurised Fluid Extraction of Bioactive Species in Tree Barks : Analysis using Hyphenated Electrochemical Mass Spectrometric Detection

    Author : Michelle Co; Charlotta Turner; Per J.R Sjöberg; Kari Hartonen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pressurised fluid extraction; antioxidants; DPPH; water; ethanol; antioxidant activity; antioxidant capacity; electrochemial detection; mass spektrometry; Chemistry; Kemi; Analytical Chemistry; Analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : Analytical chemistry has developed throughout time to meet current needs. At present, the interest in biorefinery is growing, due to environmental awareness and the depletion of fossil resources. Biomass from agricultural and forestry industries has proven to be excellent raw material for different processes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effect of Dietary Antioxidants on Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Metabolic Factors : Studies in Subjects with Overweight and with Type 2 Diabetes

    Author : Elisabet Rytter; Samar Basu; Bengt Vessby; Anders Sjödin; Helmut Sies; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Antioxidants; supplementation; fruit and vegetables; oxidative stress; isoprostanes; lipid peroxidation; oxidative damage to DNA; glycaemic control; inflammation; overweight; type 2 diabetes; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Nutrition; Nutrition;

    Abstract : Observational studies have indicated that fruit and vegetables, and dietary antioxidants may play an important role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases, potentially by affecting pathogenic mechanisms such as oxidative stress and inflammation. Clinical trials investigating the effects of supplementation with single or a few antioxidants in high doses have, however, shown inconsistent results and thus have not been able to support the observational findings. 3. 3. Bioactive Proteins in Bovine Milk - Studies on Glutathione Peroxidase, Lactoferrin and Immunoglobulins

    Author : Helena Lindmark Månsson; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; General biomedical sciences; Biokemisk teknik; Biochemical technology; thermal stability; milk processability; selenium; antioxidants; immunoglobulin; lactoferrin; Milk; glutathione peroxidase; Biomedicinska vetenskaper allmänt ; Biochemistry; Metabolism; Biokemi; metabolism;

    Abstract : Many proteins in bovine milk exhibit specific biological activity in addition to their established nutritional value as source of protein. Examples of such bioactive proteins are extracellular glutathione peroxidase, lactoferrin and immunoglobulins. READ MORE

  4. 4. Exploring Novel Catalytic Chalcogenide Antioxidants

    Author : Henrik Johansson; Lars Engman; Helena Grennberg; Troels Skrydstrup; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; antioxidant; tellurium; selenium; catalytic; toxicity; ROS; neutrophil; glutathione peroxidase mimic; macrophage.; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; Kemi med inriktning mot organisk kemi; Chemistry with specialization in Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis is concerned with the synthesis and evaluation of regenerable chalcogen containing antioxidants. Variously substituted 2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]selenophene-5-ol antioxidants were evaluated in order to gain information about structure/reactivity-relationships. READ MORE

  5. 5. Pathophysiological impact of targeting the ROS-p53 axis

    Author : Volkan I. Sayin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antioxidants; Cancer; p53; ROS; atherosclerosis;

    Abstract : The goal of this PhD thesis was to define the importance of the interplay between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their activation of the tumor suppressor p53 in development and disease. We addressed this question using molecular biology and biochemical techniques together with mouse genetics and bioinformatics. READ MORE
