  1. 11. Pharmacogenetics and Antipsychotic Treatment in Schizophrenia with Special Focus on Adverse Drug Reactions

    Author : Arzu Gunes; Marja-Liisa Dahl; Maria Gabriella Scordo; Kristina I. Melkersson; Jürgen Brockmöller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Pharmacogenetics; schizophrenia; antipsychotic treatment; adverse effects; clinical outcome; Medicin;

    Abstract : Genetically determined differences in drug metabolism and disposition and drug targets play a pivotal role in the interindividual variability in the clinical outcome of antipsychotic treatment. The aim of this thesis was to study the impact of polymorphisms in genes involved in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antipsychotics, with special focus on their extrapyramidal and metabolic adverse effects. 2. 12. Treatments and outcomes in bipolar disorder

    Author : Erik Joas; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bipolar disorder; lithium; psychoeducation; CYP2C19; antidepressants; epidemiology; valproate; quetiapine; olanzapine; suicide;

    Abstract : Bipolar disorder is defined by recurring mood episodes and patients have a markedly increased risk of suicide. Pharmacological and psychological treatments for bipolar disorder have proven efficacy in clinical trials yet the generalizability of current evidence to routine clinical practice is contested. 3. 13. Cytochrome P450 2C9, 2C19 and 2D6 genetic polymorphisms : evaluation of genotyping as a tool for individualised treatment

    Author : Maria Gabriella Scordo; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Drug metabolism; CYP2C9; CYP2C19; CYP2D6; genotyping; polymorphism; risperidone; warfarin; fluoxetine; phenytoin; extrapyramidal side-effects;

    Abstract : Recent advances in the understanding of drug metabolism and the molecular biology of CYPs have generated great expectations regarding the use of pharmacogenetic testing as a tool to individualize drug treatment. The individual pharmacogenetic constitution might in principle predict the response to drugs, hormones and toxins. READ MORE

  4. 14. Epidemiological studies of medication use and effectiveness in bipolar disorder

    Author : Louise Wingård; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In the last decades, new treatments for bipolar disorder (BD) have emerged, prompting a decrease in the use of lithium – the former “gold standard” for relapse prevention, and increasing the possibilities for individualized treatment. The aims of this thesis were to: 1) explore the use of relapse prevention in the early phases of bipolar illness, 2) add to the current knowledge concerning the comparative effectiveness of various pharmacological maintenance treatments, including combination therapies, and 3) explore the use of benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics (so called Z-drugs) in BD. 5. 15. Adverse drug effects on glucose and lipid metabolism: is human adipose tissue of importance?

    Author : Assel Sarsenbayeva; Jan Eriksson; Mikael Rydén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; human adipose tissue; metabolic adverse effects; SGAs; statins; glucocorticoids; glucose uptake; lipolysis; myofibroblasts; fibrosis; Endocrinology and Diabetology; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi;

    Abstract : Many pharmacological agents that are widely prescribed in clinical practice have adverse metabolic effects, such as hyperglycaemia, insulin resistance, and diabetes. Among such drugs are antipsychotics, prescribed for treatment of schizophrenia; statins, which inhibit cholesterol synthesis and prevent cardiovascular events; finally, potent anti-inflammatory agents, glucocorticoids.
