    Author : Sigurd Johansson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; transfer; training know-how; technology transfer; aid; consultancy services; participatory case study; hydro power;

    Abstract : In this thesis an aid financed attempt to transfer technical training know- how in the form of consultancy support is described and analysed. Between 1992 and 1996 Swedish consultants acted as advisers during the establishment phase of the Aswan training centre. READ MORE

  2. 22. Antibiotic Resistance and the Cellular Currency S-adenosyl-methionine : Modification of aminoglycosides and nucleic acids

    Author : Sandesh Kanchugal P; Maria Selmer; Ditlev Brodersen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; streptomycin; spectinomycin; X-ray crystallography; methyltransferase; Biology with specialization in Structural Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot strukturbiologi;

    Abstract : Streptomycin and spectinomycin are antibiotics that bind to ribosomes and inhibit protein synthesis. Common resistance mechanisms involve enzymatic modification of the two drugs by aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferases (ANTs). The first part of this thesis covers the structural mechanism of two ANT enzymes. READ MORE

  3. 23. The Foxf2 gene in development and disease

    Author : Azadeh Reyahi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Foxf2; Pericyte; brain development; stroke;

    Abstract : The Foxf2 gene in development and disease Azadeh Reyahi Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Gothenburg, Box 462, SE 405 30, Göteborg, Sweden Abstract In this thesis I present our recent data on the involvement and the mechanism of action of the forkhead transcription factor Foxf2 in development of the brain microvasculature, formation of the blood-brain barrier, control of the intestinal stem cell niche, and fusion of the secondary palate. The potential clinical signifi- cance of these findings is strengthened by a correlation between Foxf2 expres- sion and intestinal adenoma formation, and by association between genetic vari- ants in human FOXF2 and incident stroke. 4. 24. Metals take flight : Transport and effects across ecosystems

    Author : Johan Lidman; A. M. M. Berglund; Micael Jonsson; Christian Bigler; Brendan Mckie; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metals; aquatic subsidies; passerines; aquatic insects; environmental science; miljövetenskap; ekotoxikologi; Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Metal contamination can have severe toxic effects in the ecosystems, resulting in loss of biodiversity, reduced abundance of organisms, and loss of ecosystem services. Traditionally, aquatic ecosystems have been regarded as a sink of metal contamination. READ MORE

  5. 25. Co-evolution of the HIV-1 R5 phenotype and the viral envelope glycoproteins

    Author : Johanna Repits; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; envelope; R5; HIV-1; evolution;

    Abstract : To gain entry into target cells, HIV-1 binds to CD4 via the viral glycoprotein gp120. This interac-tion initiates a series of events including binding of a coreceptor, CCR5 and/or CXCR4, and ulti-mately leads to gp41-mediated fusion of the viral and cell membranes. READ MORE
