  1. 1. Nature-inspired passive flow control using various coatings and appendages

    Author : Ugis Lacis; Shervin Bagheri; Christophe Eloy; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; flow control; passive appendage; surface coating; pressure drag; friction drag; Flödeskontroll; passiva bihang; ytbeläggning; tryckmotstånd; friktionsmotstånd;

    Abstract : There is a wide variety of tails, fins, scales, riblets and surface coatings, which are used by motile animals in nature. Since organisms currently living on earth have gone through millions of years of evolution, one can expect that their design is optimal for their tasks, including locomotion. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Columnar Lined Esophagus: aspects on the assessment of dysplasia and on the relationship with the esophageal submucosal glands

    Author : Ester Lörinc; Malmö Klinisk patologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Columnar lined esophagus; Barrett´s esophagus; submucosal gland; multilayered epithelium; p53; Ki67; CK17; skin appendage;

    Abstract : Columnar metaplasia, where columnar epithelium replaces the normal squamous epithelium in esophagus, is considered to be a precancerous condition in which the development of adenocarcinoma can be followed through various grades of dysplasia. The interpretation of these histological changes is subjective and suffers from considerable inter-observer variation among pathologists. READ MORE

  3. 3. Health economic aspects of stroke: stroke prevention and effects on spouses' healthcare consumption and income

    Author : Frida Labori; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Income; Healthcare utilisation; Informal care; Left atrial appendage occlusion; Spouse; Stroke prevention;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate two health economic aspects of stroke: (i) the clinical and cost-effectiveness of stroke prevention with left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) among persons with atrial fibrillation (AF) and contraindication to OAC, (ii) the long-term consequences of stroke on spouses' healthcare utilisation and financial situation and its potential impact in health economic evaluations. The long-term clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of LAAO among persons with AF and contraindications to OAC were estimated using a systematic review, meta-analysis, and a decision-analytic model. 4. 4. Models of porous, elastic and rigid materials in moving fluids

    Author : Ugis Lacis; Shervin Bagheri; Fredrik Lundell; Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fluid-structure-interaction; flow control; passive appendages; homogenization; poroelastic coatings; separated flows; surface-fluid interface; fluid-struktur-interaktion; flödeskontroll; passiva utväxter; homogenisering; ytbeläggning; separerade strömning; ytbeläggning-strömning gränssnitt; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : Tails, fins, scales, and surface coatings are used by organisms for various tasks, including locomotion. Since millions of years of evolution have passed, we expect that the design of surface structures is optimal for the tasks of the organism. These structures serve as an inspiration in this thesis to identify new mechanisms for flow control. READ MORE

  5. 5. The Role of Transesophageal Echocardiography in Clinical Decision-Making in Patients with Stroke or Atrial Fibrillation

    Author : Anders Roijer; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Cardiovascular system; stroke; cardioversion; Transesophageal echocardiography; embolic sources; atrial fibrillation;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the clinical use of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in patients with stroke or atrial fibrillation. Subjects were examined with echocardiography and sonography of the carotid artery. A control group of randomly selected volunteers without cerebrovascular disease was compared to patients with ischemic stroke. READ MORE
