11. Links Between Structure and Function of Heterotrophic Aquatic Bacterial Communities
Abstract : Heterotrophic bacteria utilize dissolved organic matter, and the carbon flow through an ecosystem depends on the fractions of the utilized carbon that is either respired or transferred to higher trophic levels. The major aim this thesis is to investigate 1) the relationship between composition and functioning in heterotrophic bacterioplankton communities and 2) the influence of environmental conditions on both parameters. 12. Aquatic vegetation in coastal ecosystems : The role of biotic interactions and environmental change for ecosystem functions and resilience in the Baltic Sea
Abstract : Coastal ecosystems are among the most productive on Earth but subjected to many human pressures. In shallow coastal areas, aquatic vegetation constitutes foundation species that sustain secondary production and act as a nutrient filter, which may buffer human impacts. READ MORE

13. The Baltic Sea from the present to future : microbial carbon & nutrient cycling in a changing climate
Abstract : Climate Change is caused by the accelerated increase of anthropogenic greenhousegas emissions to the atmosphere and affects all ecosystems on our planet. A resultof higher CO2 uptake by the oceans as well as an increase of heat trapped in theatmosphere leads to, for example acidification, stratification, sea-level rise, oxygenloss, and temperature increase of the earth’s waterbodies. 14. Ecology of zooplankton communities: climate, dormancy, and benthic-pelagic coupling
Abstract : This thesis describes how influences, such as top down and bottom up forces, shape zooplankton communities in shallow lakes. I have also extended the traditional food-web theory by investigating the effects of climate on total biomass, taxonomic composition, and temporal properties of zooplankton communities. READ MORE

15. The effects of crayfish on interactions in freshwater benthic communities
Abstract : This thesis examines how freshwater crayfish affect community interactions in benthic food webs. I have mainly studied the influence of the introduced signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on littoral communities, but also the influence of the native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus).
