1. Presence and viability of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in aquatic environments
Abstract : Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is one of the major causes of diarrhoea among children in developing countries and in travelers to these regions. The bacteria are spread via contaminated water and food, and surface and drinking water in developing countries has been found to harbor these organisms. READ MORE

2. Psychotropic Pharmaceuticals in Aquatic Systems: An Ecological Perspective
Abstract : Psychotropic pharmaceuticals have been shown to exert a variety of sublethal effects on non-target organisms, even at low concentrations found in the environment (ng/L to µg/L); hence, the aim of my research has been to determine the individual-level effects of psychotropic pharmaceuticals (the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors sertraline and fluoxetine, and the β-blocker propranolol) on behavioral and life history traits in freshwater organisms. Further, this research was directed towards assessing the potential large-scale impacts of these effects on population growth and predator-prey interactions (with community-level implications) via the application of traditional, ecological concepts and models. 3. Characterisation of PFASs and Organofluorine in Freshwater Environments : Transfer from water to land via emergent aquatic insects
Abstract : Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are anthropogenic contaminants of emerging concern, because many are highly persistent to degradation and have been linked to adverse effects in humans as well as their ubiquitous spread in aquatic environments. This thesis investigated distribution of PFASs and organofluorine in freshwater environments impacted by PFAS point sources. READ MORE

4. Functional and structural characterizations of phytoplankton-bacteria interactions in response to environmental challenges
Abstract : Microorganisms, such as phytoplankton and bacteria, make up ≈70% of aquatic biomass and contribute 50-85% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. The microbial loop concept and the discovery of the large diversity in microbial communities acknowledge that biotic interactions between microorganisms in addition to resource competition enable the recycling of energy and nutrients in aquatic food webs. 5. On the exposure assessment of engineered nanoparticles in aquatic environments
Abstract : The socio-economic benefits anticipated with the use and production of nanomaterial and nanoparticles in consumer products are linked to the fulfillment of the requirement for sustainability during the whole material life cycle. Engineered nanoparticles (ENP) can be of environmental concern, both due to the possible hazardous effects but also due to the differences in properties compared to regular chemicals, e. READ MORE
