  1. 11. System Perspectives on Hydro-Kinetic Energy Conversion

    Author : Katarina Yuen; Mats Leijon; Chul Hee Jo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tidal energy; permanent magnet; direct-drive; in-stream power converter; load control; vertical axis turbine; renewable energy; engineering science; Engineering Science with specialization in Science of Electricity; Teknisk fysik med inriktning mot elektricitetslära;

    Abstract : Free-flowing water currents such as tides and unregulated water courses could contribute to world electricity production given the emergence of robust technical solutions for extracting the energy. At Uppsala University, a concept for converting the energy in water currents to electricity using a vertical axis turbine with fixed blade-pitch and a direct-drive permanent magnet generator is studied. 2. 12. Climate change impacts on aquatic consumer communities

    Author : Shuntaro Koizumi; Pär Byström; Ryan Sponseller; Jonathan Shurin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Climate change; warming; browning; aquatic consumers; zooplankton; benthic insects; fish; ecosystem experiment; environmental science; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Climate change represents a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems, with an increase in lake temperatures already observed that is expected to continue in the near future. Aside from the direct effects of warming, climate change is also partially responsible for the browning of lakes. READ MORE

  3. 13. Computer Simulation of the Neural Control of Locomotion in the Cat and the Salamander

    Author : Nalin Harischandra; Örjan Ekeberg; Silvia Gruhn; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Locomotion; Computer simulation; Central pattern generator; System identification; Gait transition; Sensory feedback; Spiking neural networks;

    Abstract : Locomotion is an integral part of a whole range of animal behaviours. The basic rhythm for locomotion in vertebrates has been shown to arise from local networks residing in the spinal cord and these networks are known as central pattern generators (CPG). READ MORE

  4. 14. Ecosystem processes and biodiversity : theoretical studies and experiments with an aquatic model ecosystem

    Author : Jon Norberg; Michael L Pace; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Systems Ecology; systemekologi;

    Abstract : Today, human enterprise has implications for all of nature, from the well being of the smallest organism, to the alteration of global biogeochemical cycles. To understand how major ecosystem processes are affected by environmental changes and decreasing biodiversity is crucial as many of natures services depend of such processes. READ MORE

  5. 15. Metals take flight : Transport and effects across ecosystems

    Author : Johan Lidman; A. M. M. Berglund; Micael Jonsson; Christian Bigler; Brendan Mckie; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metals; aquatic subsidies; passerines; aquatic insects; environmental science; miljövetenskap; ekotoxikologi; Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Metal contamination can have severe toxic effects in the ecosystems, resulting in loss of biodiversity, reduced abundance of organisms, and loss of ecosystem services. Traditionally, aquatic ecosystems have been regarded as a sink of metal contamination. READ MORE
