11. Consumption patterns and excretion in aquatic food websenrichment
Abstract : This thesis links biogeochemical cycling to classical ecology. Predictions derived from food chain theory, based on Lotka-Volterra type of interactions, were tested in aquatic environments with the main hypothesis that consumers affect lower levels of organization by both predation and excretion of limiting nutrients. 12. Diversity of aquatic viruses from genes to host interactions
Abstract : Viruses are the most numerous entities on Earth, and can be found in all waters. In aquatic ecosystems, viruses are key players since they alter the way energy and nutrients are transferred by killing larger organisms. READ MORE

13. Evolution of streamlined genomes in ultra-small aquatic bacteria
Abstract : This thesis investigates the evolutionary processes of streamlined genomes from aquatic bacteria adapting to different salinities, using two groups of ultra-small aquatic bacteria (LD12 Alphaproteobacteria and acI Actinobacteria). Due to difficulties in obtaining pure cultures of these bacteria, culture-free approaches (single-cell genomics and metagenomics) were used to construct and compare genomes, and to study the mechanisms and selective forces of adaptation to freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. 14. Indirect effects of river regulation : consequences for landbirds of reduced numbers of aquatic insects
READ MORE

15. Metals take flight : Transport and effects across ecosystems
Abstract : Metal contamination can have severe toxic effects in the ecosystems, resulting in loss of biodiversity, reduced abundance of organisms, and loss of ecosystem services. Traditionally, aquatic ecosystems have been regarded as a sink of metal contamination. READ MORE
