21. The GRE3 encoded aldo-keto reductase and its influence on xylose fermentation in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains
Abstract : The aim of the work presented in this thesis was to improve ethanol formation from xylose in recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. This was achieved by decreasing the xylitol by-product formation. Gre3p is the major xylose-reducing enzyme in S. cerevisiae. READ MORE

22. Design of kinetic models for assessment of critical aspects in bioprocess development : A case study of biohydrogen
Abstract : The world faces major climate challenges and extensive efforts need to be taken to combat this issue. Replacing fossil-derived fuels and chemicals with renewables are one important step on the way. Hydrogen has a great potential as a renewable energy carrier for the transport sector and as a green chemical for the industry. READ MORE

23. Farm to furan derivatives : Fractionation of agricultural residues and transformation of sugars to chemical building blocks
Abstract : The transition of industrial production from petrochemistry to a more sustainable economy requires the use of carbon neutral, renewable feedstock, which does not compete with food and feed supplies – by-products of farming and agro-food industry offer this possibility. With a limited range of low-value applications today coupled with the need for maximal utilisation of resources, the by-products of farming can be repurposed as feedstock for biorefineries. READ MORE

24. Studies on nucleic acids chemistry
Abstract : This thesis is divided into three parts: Part 1: Synthesis and conformational analysis of cyclic RNAs, and comparison with lariat RNAs modelling the lariat formed during processing of Group II and Nuclear pre-mRNA. Synthesis of a hexameric lariat RNA model with a tetranucleotidyl "2' → 5' loop" and a dinucleotidyl "3'-tail" has been accomplished. READ MORE

25. Appraisal of strategies to improve thermophilic hydrogen production exploiting Caldicellulosiruptor species
Abstract : The transition from a fossil to a bio-based economy is of vital importance to stem the effects of ongoing climate change. This bio-based economy will necessitate the production of both biofuels and chemical compounds from biologicalsources. READ MORE
