1. Understanding the genetic architecture of fatty liver disease
Abstract : Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently the most common chronic liver disease, ranging from simple steatosis to more severe conditions, namely non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). NAFLD has a strong genetic component, and its heritability depends on environmental factors and ethnicity. READ MORE

2. Contrast enhanced transrectal ultrasound of the prostate : An experimental and clinical study
Abstract : The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the diagnostic potential of a new ultrasound contrast agent,SonazoidTM, intended for use in patients with suspicion of prostate cancer. The sonographic appearance of normal prostatic vascularity in dogs was evaluated before and after injection of Sonazoid, using different Doppler flow detection modes. 3. Human Bone Marrow Microenvironment in Health and Disease
Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are safeguarded from various threats such as stress, injury, or radiationwithin specialized microenvironments or niches within the bone marrow. In this thesis, we investigatedvarious facets of the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment and its critical role in hematopoiesis andrelated disorders. READ MORE

4. Aquaporins in Infection and Inflammation
Abstract : The ability of eukaryotic cells to change their shape and to migrate directionally is highly dependent on active volume regulation in cells building up tissues as well as in individual cells. Transmembrane fluxes of water via specialized water channels, called aquaporins (AQPs), facilitate the changes of volume and shape, which additionally require a complex interplay between the plasma membrane and the cytoskeleton. 5. Benefits of Non-Linear Mixed Effect Modeling and Optimal Design : Pre-Clinical and Clinical Study Applications
Abstract : Despite the growing promise of pharmaceutical research, inferior experimentation or interpretation of data can inhibit breakthrough molecules from finding their way out of research institutions and reaching patients. This thesis provides evidence that better characterization of pre-clinical and clinical data can be accomplished using non-linear mixed effect modeling (NLMEM) and more effective experiments can be conducted using optimal design (OD).
