Abstract : This thesis studies the phenomenon of modern genocide denial, focusing in particular on the Western denialist cultures surrounding the Holocaust and the Armenian genocide of 1915.While those denying, rationalizing or trivializing the Holocaust may be completely separated from those engaging in denial of the Armenian genocide, both cultures of denial have undergone similar historical phases and developments. Abstract : How come that the Armenian genocide, a century old issue, is still a highly topical question, academic as well as political, in our days? My dissertation intends to follow the development of the Armenian question since WWI, with focus on the past half century, starting on the 50th commemoration day on April 24, 1965. Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to examine the use of symbolic power at the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire and the Cilician kingdom of Armenia, and to further explore and discuss problems of language, translation, ethnography, legitimacy, culture and distinctions between “East” and “West” through these cases. Despite their geographical distance and diverse histories, these regions are united through a past of Byzantine domination and by their entering into unions with the Roman Papacy at this time.
