  1. 1. Evolutionary Resolutions of Conflicts with Mates and Offspring

    Author : Roger Härdling; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Clutch evolution; Arms race; Idothea baltica; Evolutionary conflicts; Sexual conflicts; Parent-offspring; Endosperm; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : In sexual conflicts and conflicts between parents and offspring, natural selection acts in different directions on the two sides. For example, males may be selected to achieve many mates, but female fitness may be maximised by monogamy. In this thesis I study the evolutionary outcome of these situations mainly by theoretical modelling. READ MORE

  2. 2. Taxonomy, phylogeny, and secondary sexual character evolution of diving beetles, focusing on the genus Acilius

    Author : Johannes Bergsten; Anders N. Nilsson; Jyrki Muona; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; antagonistic coevolution; arms race; sexual conflict; diving beetle; Dytiscidae; Coleoptera; taxon sampling; long-branch attraction; parsimony; Bayesian analysis; taxonomic revision; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Sexual conflict can lead to antagonistic coevolution between the sexes, but empirical examples are few. In this thesis secondary sexual characters in diving beetles are interpreted in the light of sexual conflict theory. READ MORE

  3. 3. Complement evasion strategies of human pathogens - the evolutionary arms race

    Author : Monika Jusko; Malmö Proteinkemi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; complement system; pathogen; periodontitis; proteases; immune escape;

    Abstract : Although the complement system, a pivotal component of innate immunty, is centrally involved in host defense against pathogens, its overactivation or deregulation may excessively amplify inflammation and contribute to immunopathology. Periodontitis, an oral infection-driven chronic inflammatory disease, has been linked with complement disruption by periodontal bacteria, resulting in inflammation and pathogenesis. READ MORE

    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; conflict analysis; repeated least squares; arms race; decision theory; PID-control; Decoupling filters; Ziegler- and Nichols method; two-step methods; least-squares identification;

  5. 5. Conflicts in Information Ecosystems

    Author : Bengt Carlsson; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Multiagentsystem; Informationsekosystem; Spelteori; Antagonistiska grupper;

    Abstract : The main topic of this thesis concerns the study of how conflicting interests of software agents within an information ecosystem may cause cooperative behavior. Since such agents act on the behalf of their human owners, which often act in their own interest, this will sometimes result in malignant acts. READ MORE
