  1. 1. Artery Wall Imaging and Effects of Postmenopausal Estrogen Therapy

    Author : Kenny A. Rodriguez-Macias Wallberg; Tord Naessén; Lars-Åke Mattsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; artery wall thickness; tunica media; tunica intima; arterial stiffness; carotid; aorta; cardiovascular disease; atherosclerosis; menopause; estrogen; hormone therapy; ultrasound; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause. 2. 2. Aspects on wall properties of the brachial artery in man : with special reference to SLE and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

    Author : Niclas Bjarnegård; Toste Länne; Reinhard Volkmann; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Arterial wall; atherosclerotic; brachial artery BA ; type 1 diabetes; ulse wave velocity PWV ; pulse wave analysis PWA ; intima-media thickness IMT ; nitrate mediated dilatation NMD ; Diabetology; Diabetologi;

    Abstract : The mechanical properties of the arterial wall are of great importance for blood pressure regulation and cardiac load. With increasing age, large arteries are affected by increased wall stiffness. READ MORE

  3. 3. Longitudinal Common Carotid Artery Wall Motion - mechanistic, prognostic and translational studies

    Author : Sara Svedlund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : carotid artery; longitudinal wall motion; ultrasound; velocity vector imaging; risk factor;

    Abstract : The longitudinal arterial movement of the common carotid artery (CCA) has been less investigated during the past compared to the radial movement. This is probably due to lack of an adequate measuring method. Velocity vector ultrasound imaging (VVI) now enables assessment of the longitudinal movement. READ MORE

  4. 4. Carotid Vessel Wall Thickness and Echogenicity : In the ULSAM study

    Author : Martin Wohlin; Lars Lind; Johan Sundström; Samar Basu; Stefan Agewall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Epidemiology; Medicin;

    Abstract : In this thesis the common carotid artery intima media thickness in nearly 500 elderly men is independently associated with insulin sensitivity, measured by the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test (paper 1), to both COX- and cytokine mediated inflammation independently of other markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and antioxidant status (paper 2) and also to the alleles of the apolipoprotein gene independently of lipid levels and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 3). The echogenicity of the carotid intima-media complex measured as grey scale median predicts mortality independently of common carotid artery intima-media thickness, prior cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 4). 5. 5. Carotid artery disease : plaque features and vulnerability

    Author : Fisnik Jashari; Michael Henein; Per Wester; Christine Kremer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carotid atherosclerosis; ultrasound; plaque features; echogenicity; calcification; surface plaque irregularities; subclinical atherosclerosis; cerebrovascular symptoms; Cardiology; kardiologi; cardiovascular disease; hjärt- och kärlforskning;

    Abstract : Background: Atherosclerosis is an important cause of stroke. Ultrasound offers the convenience of real-time and detailed assessment of carotid plaque features as well as arterial wall thickening and composition. READ MORE
