  1. 16. Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunts in Children : Technical Considerations and Treatment of Certain Complications

    Author : Kai Arnell; Tomas Wester; Jan Sjölin; Per Enblad; Hans C-son Silander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Surgery; Hydrocephalus; papilloedema; abdominal cyst; cerebrospinal fluid shunt; shunt infection; intraventricular antibiotic instillation; intraventricular antibiotic concentrations; in-vitro testing; antisiphon device; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Ventriculo-peritoneal shunting is the most commonly used method for the treatment of paediatric hydrocephalus. Despite improved shunts and surgical techniques there are still complications. This retrospective study focuses on diagnoses and treatment of shunt malfunction and infections. Cost/benefit of using an adjustable shunt was assessed. READ MORE

  2. 17. Advanced Ovarian Cancer. A multimodal diagnostic approach to predict outcome

    Author : Mihaela Asp; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Advanced ovarian cancer; multidisciplinary; tru-cut biopsy; frozen section; peritoneal cancer index; CT; primary debulking surgery; cytoreductive surgery; survival;

    Abstract : Primary debulking surgery (PDS) followed by platinum-based postoperative chemotherapy isthe standard of care for advanced ovarian cancer (AOC). Absence of macroscopic residualdisease after debulking surgery is the strongest prognostic factor achieved by surgery. READ MORE

  3. 18. Calcium metabolism and cytokines in critical illness

    Author : Fredrik Carlstedt; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Hypocalcemia is a common finding in critically ill patients, particularly in those with sepsis, and has been found to be associated with increased mortality. The pathogenesis of this altered calcium metabolism is unknown and the effects of calcium supplementation are poorly investigated. READ MORE

  4. 19. Receptor tyrosine kinase signaling and extracellular matrix cues in ovarian cancer metastasis and drug resistance

    Author : Lidia Moyano Galceran; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Albeit many studies have contributed towards understanding the origin, development, treatment response and evolution of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC), the exact supporting mechanisms are still not fully understood, and the disease remains a clinical challenge with low 5-year survival and high recurrence rate. The purpose of this thesis was to study the dynamic communication between the cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment (TME) to understand how these influence and are affected by disease progression and chemotherapy in the context of HGSC. 5. 20. Mitochondria and cellular energy metabolism in platinum chemotherapy

    Author : Emma Hernlund; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Chemotherapy is a major strategy in the treatment of cancer. Unfortunately, treatment of advanced cancers often fails due to tumor resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs. READ MORE
