  1. 16. Mechanistic-Empirical Modeling of Permanent Deformation in Asphalt Concrete Layers

    Author : Erik Oscarsson; Trafik och väg; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; permanent deformation; modeling; Mechanistic-Empirical; rutting; asphalt concrete; full-scale pavements;

    Abstract : Three mechanistic-empirical permanent deformation models were evaluated under Swedish conditions with respect to traffic, climate and materials using accelerated pavement testing and long-term pavement performance studies. The mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (M E PDG), the incremental-recursive mechanistic-empirical CalME model (CalME), and the PErmanent Deformation of asphalt concrete layer for ROads (PEDRO) model generally showed both useful features and limitations. 2. 17. Mechanics-based Design Framework for Flexible Pavements

    Author : Yared H. Dinegdae; Björn Birgisson; David Newcomb; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mechanics-based; asphalt; fatigue; reliability; traffic; variability; Mekanik-baserade; utmattningssprickor; pålitlighet; lastbilstrafiken; variabilitet; Byggvetenskap; Civil and Architectural Engineering;

    Abstract : Load induced top-down fatigue cracking has been recognized recently as a major distress phenomenon in asphalt pavements. This paper presents a mechanics-based design framework in load and resistance factor design (LRFD) format for the top-down fatigue cracking performance evaluation of flexible pavements. READ MORE

  3. 18. Methods for measurements and analyses of cracks in flexible pavements

    Author : Petra Offrell; KTH; []
    Keywords : Cracking; Crack propagation; Data collection methods; Image analysis; Image processing; LTPP; Automatic identification systems; Flexible pavement; PAVUE; Laser RST; measures; characterisation; x-ray computerised tomography; asphalt; 3D analysis; top-;

    Abstract : When cracking has propagated through the entire asphaltbound layers, water may ingress into the unbound layers andaccelerate the deterioration of the road structure. Knowledgeon where cracks initiate and how they propagate vertically istherefore of great practical importance. READ MORE

  4. 19. On the influence of surface roughness on rolling contact forces

    Author : Oskar Lundberg; Ines Lopez Arteaga; Leif Kari; Matthias Kröger; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Rolling contact; Surface roughness; Contact forces; Contact modelling; Friction; Road; Asphalt; Substrate; Test-rig; Sliding; Stick–slip; Tyre; Rubber; Tread-block; Wheel–rail interaction; Vehicle and Maritime Engineering; Farkostteknik;

    Abstract : Road vehicle tyres, railway wheels and ball bearings all generate rolling contact forces which are transferred within a finite area of contact between the rolling element and the substrate. Either it is visible or not for the human eye, a certain degree of roughness is always present on the contacting surfaces and it influences the generation of both vertical and lateral contactforces. 5. 20. Thermally Induced Fracture Performance of Asphalt Mixtures

    Author : Prabir Kumar Das; Björn Birgisson; Dallas Little; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Low temperature cracking; asphalt concrete fracture mechanics; viscoelasticity; non-linear thermal contraction coefficient; atomic force microscopy; wax; wax crystallization; SRA - Transport; SRA - Transport;

    Abstract : A major distress mode in asphalt pavements is low temperature cracking, which results from the contraction and expansion of the asphalt pavement under extreme temperature changes. The potential for low temperature cracking is an interplay between the environment, the road structure and importantly the properties of the asphalt mixture. READ MORE
