11. Molecular basis for galectin-ligand interactions : Design, synthesis and analysis of ligands
Abstract : Galectins are a class of β-galactoside-binding proteins that bind glycoconjugates and have been implicated in cancer, regulation of immunity and inflammation. Design and synthesis have achieved highly potent and selective galectin ligands that can inhibit interactions with glycoproteins and have consequent cellular effects. READ MORE

12. Design and evaluation of drug delivery vehicles
Abstract : A crucial aspect of drug delivery is efficient transport to the site of action. Thus, there is a need to design and evaluate new delivery vehicles. In this thesis two delivery vehicles, cell-penetrating peptides and bacterial ghosts, were evaluated. READ MORE

13. Design and Synthesis of BACE-1 Inhibitors : Novel Compounds Targeting an Aspartic Protease Important in the Pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s Disease
Abstract : This thesis deals with the design and synthesis of protease inhibitors targeting the aspartic protease BACE-1 (β-site APP cleaving enzyme-1), an enzyme important in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The inhibitors are evaluated with respect to inhibition data, in a structure-activity relationship part. READ MORE

14. Antiadhesive agents targeting uropathogenic Escherichia coli : Multivariate studies of protein-protein and protein-carbohydrate interactions
Abstract : This thesis describes studies directed towards development of novel antiadhesive agents, with particular emphasis on compounds that prevent attachment of bacteria to a host-cell. Three different proteins involved in the assembly or function of adhesive pili in uropathogenic Escherichia coli have been targeted either by rational structure based design or statistical molecular methods. 15. Development of DNA-based methods for analysis of protein interactions
Abstract : In situ proximity ligation assay (PLA) is a method for detection of protein interactions, post-translational modifications (PTMs) and individual proteins that allows information about their localization in a cell or tissue to be extracted. The method is based on oligonucleotide-conjugated antibodies (proximity probes) that upon binding of two epitopes in close proximity give rise to an amplifiable DNA circle. READ MORE
