  1. 1. Rule by Association : Japan in the Global Trans-Imperial Culture, 1868-1912

    Author : John Hennessey; Hans Hägerdal; Alexis Dudden; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; global trans-imperial culture; association; assimilation; Hokkaido; Taiwan; expositions; Japanese colonialism; Japanese Empire; colonial history; colonial administration; Historia; History;

    Abstract : Criticizing one-empire approaches, calls to apply much-needed transnational perspectives and methodologies to colonial history have recently emerged. This groundbreaking scholarship has already revealed that the competition between different European empires after 1850 has typically been overemphasized; in fact, a transnational perspective reveals extensive cooperation between the “great powers” of the age, along with myriad examples of exchanges and transfers of colonial knowledge. 2. 2. Functional association networks for disease gene prediction

    Author : Dimitri Guala; Erik L L Sonnhammer; Hjalmar Brismar; Yves Moreau; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; network biology; biological networks; network prediction; functional association; functional coupling; network integration; functional association networks; genome-wide association networks; gene networks; protein networks; fret; functional enrichment analysis; network cross-talk; pathway annotation; gene prioritisation; network-based gene prioritization; benchmarking; Biochemistry towards Bioinformatics; biokemi med inriktning mot bioinformatik;

    Abstract : Mapping of the human genome has been instrumental in understanding diseasescaused by changes in single genes. However, disease mechanisms involvingmultiple genes have proven to be much more elusive. Their complexityemerges from interactions of intracellular molecules and makes them immuneto the traditional reductionist approach. READ MORE

  3. 3. Living with VACTERL association : From the perspectives of children, adolescents and their parents

    Author : Ann-Marie Kassa; Helene Engstrand Lilja; Gunn Engvall; Agneta Anderzén Carlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Congenital malformations; Experiences of health care; Health-related quality of life; Neurodevelopmental function; Physical dysfunction; Psychological well-being; VACTERL association; Barnkirurgi; Pediatric Surgery;

    Abstract : VACTERL association is a rare and complex congenital condition often requiring repeated surgery and entailing various physical sequelae. Knowledge is scarce regarding experiences of the health condition and health care, need of support at school, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and psychological well-being in children, adolescents and their parents. 4. 4. Polyelectrolytes : Bottle-Brush Architectures and Association with Surfactants

    Author : Ali Naderi; Per M. Claesson; Orlando Rojas; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polyelectrolyte; Surfactant; Bottle-Brush Polyelectrolyte; Comb Polyelectrolyte; Non-Equilibrium State; Polymer Architecture; Adsorption; Desorption; Association; Excluded Volume; Light Scattering; SFA; AFM; QCM-D; Turbidimeter; Mica; Silica; Surface Forces; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : This thesis has the dual purpose of raising awareness of the importance of the mixing protocol on the end products of polyelectrolyte-oppositely charged surfactant systems, and to contribute to a better understanding of the properties of bottle-brush polyelectrolytes when adsorbed onto interfaces. In the first part of this thesis work, the effects of the mixing protocol and the mixing procedure on formed polyelectrolyte-oppositely charged surfactant aggregates were investigated. READ MORE

  5. 5. Genetic aspects of stroke : association and linkage studies in a northern Swedish population

    Author : Per-Gunnar Wiklund; Birgitta Stegmayr; Kjell Asplund; Dan Holmberg; Alun Evans; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Internal medicine; stroke; genetics; polymorphism; association; linkage; risk factors; plasminogen activator inhibitor-1; tissue plasminogen activator; angiotensin converting enzyme; angiotensin II receptor type 1; phosphodiesterase 4D; Invärtesmedicin; Internal medicine; Invärtesmedicin; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Stroke is a common, multifactorial cardiovascular disease. A stroke event is the result of traditional risk factors (i.e. hypertension, diabetes, smoking), environmental exposures and genetic factors in a complex interplay. READ MORE
