  1. 6. 201Thallium SPECT; accuracy in astrocytoma diagnosis and treatment evaluation

    Author : Kristina Källén; Helsingborg Kliniska Vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The aims of the studies included in this thesis were:• to investigate the reliability of 201thallium single photon emission computed tomography (201Tl SPECT) for preoperative diagnosis and histological staging of malignant astrocytomas in comparison with CT; • to develop a method for quantification of cerebral thallium uptake, and to evaluate the quantitative measurement in comparison with CT, for astrocytoma treatment follow-up purposes; • to compare quantitative 201Tl SPECT and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) with conventional MR imaging for astrocytoma monitoring, and to evaluate associations between change of morphological tumour characteristics during treatment and changes of cerebral thallium uptake and metabolic ratios. Results and conclusions:• High 201Tl-index, calculated as a ratio comparing tumour uptake to uptake in the contralateral hemisphere, is an indicator of highly malignant astrocytoma. READ MORE

  2. 7. The LRIG-family: identification of novel regulators of ErbB signaling with clinical implications in astrocytoma

    Author : Jonas Nilsson; Håkan Hedman; Roger Henriksson; Maria Sibilia; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; astrocytic tumors; EGFR; ErbB; glioblastoma multiforme; LRIG; negative regulation.; Oncology; Onkologi;

    Abstract : Astrocytic tumors are the most common malignancies of the central nervous system, accounting for more than 60% of all primary brain tumors. The prognosis for high grade astrocytoma patients is dismal and there is no curative treatment, today. READ MORE

  3. 8. Transcription factors PROX1 and p53 in cancer development

    Author : Tamador Elsir; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The majority of malignant brain tumors in adults are astrocytic gliomas. These are classified into four malignancy grades according to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, including grade I pilocytic astrocytoma, grade II astrocytoma, grade III anaplastic astrocytoma and grade IV glioblastoma. Abstract : In Sweden annually over 500 people will be diagnosed with the malignant brain tumor glioma. They are graded from I-IV. The majority are glioblastoma (grade IV) (GBM), these being the most aggressive type. Median survival for those treated with standard of care is expected to be around 15 months. READ MORE

  5. 10. Epidemiological studies including new methods for cluster analysis of acute childhood leukaemia and brain tumours in Sweden

    Author : Ulf Hjalmars; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Epidemiology; childhood; leukaemia; brain tumours; geographical information systerns; cluster analysis; Scan statistic; Knox test; environmental factors;

    Abstract : Background: The aetiology in childhood cancer is essentially unknown. Epidemiological investigations as to whether the incidence rates have changed for paediatric cancers or whether clustering of cases occur may give clues to possible causal factors. READ MORE
