  1. 1. T cells in atherogenesis

    Author : Anna-Karin L Robertson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; T cells; transforming growth factor-beta; CD4; low-density lipoproteins; Th1 Th2; hypercholesterolemia;

    Abstract : The work of this thesis aims to answer the following questions: (1) Which role do CD4+ cells play in atherosclerosis? (2) Is the expression of CD4 essential for the athero-protective effect mediated by immunization with oxidized LDL by adjuvant? (3) How does the antigenspecific T cell response to oxidized LDL influence lesion development? (4) Is there a general shift to Th2 responses in severe hypercholesterolemia? and finally (5) Which role does transforming growth factor-B (TGF-B)-signaling in T cells play in atherogenesis? ApoE-/-CD4-/- mice were used to study the effect of CD4 deficiency in atherosclerosis. The development of atherosclerosis was decreased with attenuated inflammation in apoE-/- mice lacking CD4+ cells compared to immunocompetent apoE-/-. READ MORE

  2. 2. Selected mechanisms in atherogenesis : factors affecting lipid accumulation in macrophages and in rabbit arteries

  3. 3. Iron and macrophages in atherogenesis

    Author : Xi Ming Yuan; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL) may result in its uptake by macrophages and ensuing foam cell formation. Thus, oxidised LDL may play an important role in atherogenesis. Extensive in vitro evidences are in favour of the notion that LDL oxidation by cells present in atherosclerotic plaques requires the presence of transition metals. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of atherogenic lipoproteins using mass spectrometry-based lipidomics

    Author : Marcus Ståhlman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lipids; lipoproteins; atherogenesis; lipidomics; type 2 diabetes; mass spectrometry;

    Abstract : The prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing worldwide and is about to reach epidemic proportions. The disease is often associated with dyslipidemia which is characterized by an atherogenic lipoprotein profile including elevated serum triacylglycerol levels, low high-density lipoprotein levels and high levels of small low-density lipoproteins. 5. 5. On inflammation and cardiovascular disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Solveig Wållberg Jonsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rheumatoid arthritis; mortality; cardiovascular disease; ischemic heart disease; inflammation; lipids; Lp a ; haemostasis; fibrinolysis; atherogenesis; thrombogenesis;

    Abstract : Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have a shorter life span than the general population. An increased death due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been reported. RA is characterized by synovitis and joint destruction accompanied by an acute phase reaction and systemic features. READ MORE
