1. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in rheumatoid arthritis : aspects of pathogenesis and risk
Abstract : Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have an increased prevalence and severity of atherosclerosis, and a corresponding increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The mechanisms causing this are not well elucidated, but both traditional cardiovascular risk factors and RA-associated factors have been associated with atherosclerosis and increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients with RA. 2. Modulaton of gene expression in human aortic smooth muscle cells by Porphyromonas gingivalis : a possible association between periodontitis and atherosclerosis
Abstract : Porphyromonas gingivalis is a gram-negative, rod-shaped, and anaerobic bacterium that is involved in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. P. gingivalis produces a variety of virulence factors including gingipains and fimbriae. READ MORE

3. Neutrophils in atherosclerosis
Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a complex inflammatory disease localized in medium-sized and large arteries and it is the most important contributor to cardiovascular disease. Complications of atherosclerosis such as myocardial infarction and stroke are leading causes of mortality in many countries. READ MORE

4. Identification of natural activators of the nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor : relevance to the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis
Abstract : Polyunsaturated fatty acids induce peroxisome proliferation. This phenomenon is mediated by the ligand-dependent transcription factor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR). This thesis is an investigation on the role of eicosanoids and oxidized products of linoleic acid for the activation of PPARs. READ MORE

5. Innate immune mechanisms of atherosclerosis
Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a multi-factorial immune mediated disease in arterial wall characterized by lipid driven inflammation through activation of the immune system. Chronic vascular inflammation is an important component that modulates atherosclerosis evolution and its complications. READ MORE
