11. Modelling and Applications of the Hollow Cathode Plasma
Abstract : This thesis presents experimental and modelling research on atmospheric pressure hollow cathodes and hollow electrodes. Experiments with the hybrid hollow electrode activated discharge (H-HEAD), which is a combination of a hollow cathode and a microwave plasma source, is presented. READ MORE

12. Laser Diagnostics in Combustion - Elastic Scattering and Picosecond Laser-Induced Fluorescence
Abstract : Elastic scattering and the Lorenz-Mie (LM) theory in particular is used for the characterization of sub-micron- and micron-sized droplets of organic fuels in sprays and aerosols. Calculations on the Lorenz- Mie theory show that backward-sideward scattered visible radiation can be used for unambiguous detection of ensembles of homogeneous droplets of organic substances with diameters around 1 micrometer (size parameter between 2 and 6). 13. Extreme Storms in the North Atlantic and Europe
Abstract : A study of the most extreme cyclones affecting the North Atlantic and Europe is presented with particular focus on extreme windstorms over the densely populated area of Western Europe, whose associated high surface wind speeds are capable of causing extensive structural damage and occasionally a loss of life.A novel cyclone identification and tracking algorithm is presented which explicitly recognises ‘multi-centre cyclones’ (MCCs), defined as cyclonic systems which contain two or three sea-level pressure minima. 14. Spatiotemporal climate and atmospheric circulation variability in Asia inferred from tree rings
Abstract : Observed 20th century warming trends accompanied by more frequent weather extremes such as droughts or intense rainfall events have consequences for societies and environments alike. In Asia, where the majority of the population depend on agricultural productivity, recent climate change is likely to increase societal hardships. READ MORE

15. Influence of total pressure on complete oxidation of methane over Pd/Al2O3 catalysts
Abstract : Natural gas and biogas, which have methane as their main component, are interesting choices of fuel to reduce the anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases. However, as methane is a greenhouse gas, uncombusted methane should be removed from the combustion gases. Emission control catalysts can preferably be used to completely oxidise methane. READ MORE
