11. Fatty Acid Self-Assembly at the Air–Water Interface : Curvature, Patterning, and Biomimetics: A Study by Neutron Reflectometry and Atomic Force Microscopy
Abstract : For more than a hundred years of interfacial science, long chain fatty acids have been the primary system for the study of floating monolayers at the air–water interface due to their amphiphilic nature and system simplicity: an insoluble hydrocarbon chain and a soluble carboxyl group at a flat air–water interface. Despite―or perhaps rather due to―the assumed simplicity of such systems and the maturity of the research field, the seemingly fundamentally rooted notion of a two-dimensional water surface has yet to be challenged. 12. Integrative structural biology of protein fibers: Spider silk and beta-lactoglobulin nanofibrils
Abstract : Proteins found in nature offer a vast range of exceptional materials, including high-performancebiopolymers such as spider silks and whey protein nanofibrils. Fibrous proteins possess immensepotential for developing novel materials suited for various applications, such as medicalbiomaterials or industrial products. READ MORE

13. Photoluminescence-based characterization of bioengineered nanovesicles and erbium emitters
Abstract : In recent decades, photoluminescence properties of single molecules and ions have opened new possibilities for studies on smaller size scales, below the light-diffraction limit. In this thesis, the advantages of such single photon emitters were harnessed and studied mainly in the field of biophysics, but also, in investigations within solid state photonics. READ MORE

14. Biolubricants and Biolubrication
Abstract : The main objective of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the principles of biolubrication, focusing on synergistic effects between biolubricants. To this end surface force and friction measurements were carried out by means of Atomic Force Microscopy, using hydrophilic and hydrophobic model surfaces in salt solutions of high ionic strength (≈ 150 mM) in presence of different biolubricants. 15. Micro-galvanic effects and corrosion inhibition of copper-zinc alloys
Abstract : With the advancement and accessibility of local probing techniques that can operate at the submicron scale it has become possible to analyse the local corrosion properties of industrially important metallic materials and relate these properties to microstructure characteristics of the same materials. In this doctoral study the focus has been on copper-zinc samples, both as industrial brass alloys and as micro-patterned copper-zinc samples. READ MORE
