  1. 1. Left atrial function in health and disease

    Author : Mark Henein; Per Lindqvist; Stellan Mörner; Reidar Winter; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Left atrium; Doppler echocardiography; atrial interaction; atrial pressure;

    Abstract : The Objectives of this thesis are:1) To study possible atrial interaction in patients with right and left ventricular outflow tract obstruction due to significant pulmonary (PS) and aortic valve stenosis (AS), respectively.2) To assess left atrial (LA) intrinsic myocardial function and its relationship to indirect measures of left ventricular (LV) filling pressures in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). 2. 2. Echocardiographic assessment of atrioventricular plane displacement, Clinical application in patients with coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation and aortic stenosis

    Author : Erik Rydberg; Kardiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; prognosis; aortic stenosis; atrial fibrillation; AVPD; coronary artery disease;

    Abstract : Left atrioventricular plane displacement (AVPD) has been shown to correlate well with left ventricular (LV) systolic function measured as ejection fraction (EF). AVPD has also been shown to be related to diastolic performance. READ MORE

  3. 3. Insights into left atrial response to pressure and volume overload

    Author : Matteo Lisi; Michael Henein; Sergio Mondillo; Lars-Åke Lars; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Keywords Mitral regurgitation; aortic stenosis; speckle tracking echocardiography; heart transplantation; left atrial strain; left ventricualr function; right ventricular function; myocardial fibrosis;

    Abstract : The general purpose of this thesis is to establish the ability of Speckle Tracking Echocardiography (STE) in assessing left atrial (LA) response to pressure and volume overload respectively in aortic stenosis (AS) and mitral regurgitation (MR), and to evaluate its accuracy in predicting LA and right ventricular (RV) fibrosis in patients with end-stage heart failure (HF) undergoing heart transplantation (HTx).I demonstrated that assessment of left ventricular (LV) long axis systolic velocity and amplitude of excursion is more sensitive than simple determination of ejection fraction (EF) for revealing the beneficial impact of MR surgery on overall LV systolic performance. 4. 4. Heart Failure and Aortic Stenosis - Factors Influencing Prognosis and Development

    Author : Silvana Kontogeorgos; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heart failure; prognosis; predictive factors; aortic stenosis; obesity;

    Abstract : Background: An ageing population increases the prevalence of heart failure (HF) and aortic stenosis (AS). Several studies have investigated prognosis and predictors of HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) compared to heart failure with reduced ejection frac-tion (HFrEF), with inconsistent results. 5. 5. Survival and functional recovery following valve replacement in patients with severe aortic stenosis

    Author : Wenhong Ding; Michael Y Henein; Eugenio Picano; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aortic stenosis; surgical aortic valve replacement; transcatheter aortic valve implantation; survival; predictor; echocardiography; speckle tracking; ventricular function; twist; strain; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common heart valve disease in Europe and North America. Age-related calcification of the valve is the commonest cause of acquired AS, especially in patients older than 70 years. READ MORE
