  1. 1. Attached Bacterial Communities in Lakes – Habitat-Specific Differences

    Author : Ann-Louise Haglund; Lars Tranvik; Helmut Fischer; Bengt Boström; Erik Törnblom; Paul del Giorgio; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; bacteria; freshwater; sediment; epiphyton; bacterioplankton; metabolically active; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : For many years, the importance of microorganisms attached to surfaces in littoral zones and wetlands has been disregarded when describing aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Supporting evidence is scarce but convincing that these microbial communities are not only very productive but can often serve as major regulators of nutrient and carbon dynamics in many freshwaters. 2. 2. Solar radiation effects on decomposition and decomposers of plant litter in lakes

    Author : Måns Denward; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; glucosidase; photo inhibition; photo oxidation; littoral; lakes; ergosterol; fungi; phragmites; bacteria; UV-B; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis summarizes the results of a series of experiments, from test tube up to field study scale, performed to increase the understanding of solar radiation effects on decomposition and microbial decomposers of plant litter in stagnant water of littoral zones. In conclusion, I suggest that fungi play a significant role in the decomposition of plant litter submersed in lakes, and that their distribution is dependent on detritus quality and water chemistry, but also tends to be inversely related to the occurrence of bacteria attached to the litter. 3. 3. Regulation and role of epiphytic nitrification and denitrification in macrophyte-dominated systems

    Author : Peder Eriksson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; marine biology; Hydrobiology; submerged; emergent; epiphyton; bacteria; nitrate; wetland; nitrogen; littoral; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines mechanisms regulating bacterial nitrification and denitrification in attached microbial communities on surfaces of aquatic macrophytes. It also evaluates the role of epiphytic nitrification and denitrification for the nitrogen turnover in macrophyte-dominated nutrient-rich freshwaters. READ MORE

  4. 4. Protein and Cell Interactions with Nanostructured Surfaces

    Author : Emma Westas; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; bacteria; titanium dioxide; implant associated infections; metabolomics; cellular interactions; hydroxyapatite; immune complement activation; silica; nanoparticles; photocatalysis; protein adsorption; Nanostructured implants;

    Abstract : A great challenge of today’s implant development is to construct a surface that promotes tissue integration and avoids bacterial colonization. To avoid implant related infections, many argue that a surface promoting strong cell adhesion and tissue integration in favour for bacterial adhesion would solve the problem, the so-called race for the surface concept. 5. 5. Factors influencing emission fluxes and bacterial enrichment in sea spray aerosols : Insights from laboratory and field studies

    Author : Julika Zinke; Matthew E. Salter; Paul Zieger; Rachel A. Foster; E. Douglas Nilsson; Patricia K. Quinn; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sea spray aerosols; eddy covariance fluxes; air-sea-exchange; bacteria; primary biological airborne particles; laboratory studies; field studies; Baltic Sea; North-Eastern Atlantic; Environmental Sciences; miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Sea spray aerosol (SSA) is one of the major natural aerosol sources and is produced when wave breaking entrains air into ocean surface water, which subsequently breaks up into bubbles. These bubbles rise to the surface and can scavenge biogenic material. READ MORE
