  1. 6. Pain, mechanisms of fatigue and autonomic function in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Reem Altawil; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disabling chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint pain, and potentially leading to a serious decay of life quality. Pain remains the most important problem for patients with RA, and there is an obvious need to increase the knowledge of pain patterns in early disease and relation to anti-rheumatic treatment. 2. 7. Endocrine aspects of obesity and weight reduction by bariatric surgery : with special emphasis on beta cell function

    Author : Marie Guldstrand; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Obesity; weight reduction; b ariatric surgery; insulin; glucagon; type 2 diabetes; insulin sensitivity; HPA axis; autonomic nervous system ANS ; cognitive functions; proinsulin; GIP; GLP-1; IGFBP- 1; diazoxide;

    Abstract : Severe obesity is the most predictive acquired risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes. Bariatric surgery induces marked weight loss and reverses the diabetic state significantly. READ MORE

  3. 8. Psychobiological functioning in mid-adolescent girls and boys : Linkages to self reported stress, self-esteem and recurrent pain

    Author : Lisa Folkesson Hellstadius; Petra Lindfors; Laura Ferrer-Wreder; Roger Persson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Adolescents; Cortisol; Alpha-amylase; Stress; Self-esteem; Recurrent pain; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Among adolescents, the day-to-day functioning of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal-axis (HPA-axis) and of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and their relationships with stress, subjective health complaints and psychological factors such as self-esteem, studied in naturalistic settings, have been largely unexplored. This thesis aimed to investigate the diurnal activity of the HPA-axis (Studies I & II) in terms of salivary cortisol and the ANS/SNS system (Study III) in terms of salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) in mid-adolescent girls and boys. 4. 9. Cardiac arrhythmias and heart rate variability in familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy : A clinical study before and after liver transplantation

    Author : Rolf Hörnsten; Urban Wiklund; Staffan Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Clinical physiology; Klinisk fysiologi;

    Abstract : Familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP), found in the northernmost counties in Sweden, is a rare, lethal and inherited amyloidosis. The disease is caused by mutated transthyretin (TTR). The mutation is characterized by an exchange of valine for methionine at position 30 (ATTRVal30Met). READ MORE

  5. 10. Maf transcription factors in beta cell function

    Author : Elvira Ganic; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Beta cell; MafA; type 2 diabetes; insulin secretion; transcription; monoamine oxidase; MaoA; MaoB; nicotinic receptor subunits; nAChRs;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is metabolic disorder caused by a defect or lack of beta cell-produced insulin that controls blood glucose homeostasis. In addition to glucose, insulin secretion is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS); the neurotransmitter acetylcholine as well as monoamines, such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine.
