16. Cardiovascular effects of growth hormone. Studies in genetically engineered mice
Abstract : The general aim of this thesis was to enhance the understanding on the relationships between growth hormone (GH) and cardiovascular disease using genetically engineered mice. More specifically the effects of GH on blood pressure (BP), vascular and cardiac function, atherosclerosis and autonomic control of heart rate were studied. READ MORE

17. Heart Rate Variability in Stress-related Fatigue, Adolescent Anxiety and Depression and its Connection to Lifestyle
Abstract : Heart rate varies constantly as a consequence of activity in the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous systems (SNS and PNS). In short-term recordings, heart rate variability (HRV) is mostly related to the inhibitory activity of the vagal nerves, which are part of the PNS. READ MORE

18. Accidental hypothermia and local cold injury : physiological and epidemiological studies on risk
Abstract : Background: (Papers I and II) The objectives were to first determine incidence and contributing factors to cold-related injuries in northern Sweden, both those that led to hospitalization and those that led to fatality. (Papers III and IV) A further aim was to assess post-cooling hand-rewarming responses and effects of training in a cold environment, both on fingertip rewarming and on function of the autonomic nervous system, to evaluate if there was adaptation related to prolonged occupational cold exposure. 19. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in Northern Sweden : with special emphasis on molecular genetics
Abstract : Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heterogeneous, often familial disease, characterized by cardiac hypertrophy, predominantly affecting the interventricular septum. To date, no study has systematically analysed the genetic and phenotypic aspects of the disease in a Swedish population. READ MORE

20. Adipose tissue as an active organ : blood flow regulation and tissue-specific glucocorticoid metabolism
Abstract : Background: Despite advances in the treatment of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. With the population getting older and more obese, the burden of cardiovascular disease may further increase. READ MORE
