11. On Fundamental Elements of Visual Navigation Systems
Abstract : Visual navigation is a ubiquitous yet complex task which is performed by many species for the purpose of survival. Although visual navigation is actively being studied within the robotics community, the determination of elemental constituents of a robust visual navigation system remains a challenge. READ MORE

12. Functional understanding of space : Representing spatial knowledge using concepts grounded in an agent's purpose
Abstract : This thesis examines the role of function in representations of space by robots - that is, dealing directly and explicitly with those aspects of space and objects in space that serve some purpose for the robot. It is suggested that taking function into account helps increase the generality and robustness of solutions in an unpredictable and complex world, and the suggestion is affirmed by several instantiations of functionally conceived spatial models. 13. Towards On-line Learning Agents for Autonomous Navigation
Abstract : The design of a mechatronic agent capable of navigating autonomously in a changing and perhaps previously unfamiliar environment is a very challenging issue. This thesis addresses this issue from both functional and system perspectives. READ MORE

14. Robust large-scale mapping and localization : Combining robust sensing and introspection
Abstract : The presence of autonomous systems is rapidly increasing in society and industry. To achieve successful, efficient, and safe deployment of autonomous systems, they must be navigated by means of highly robust localization systems. READ MORE

15. Localization for Autonomous Vehicles in Underground Mines
Abstract : The trend of automation in industry, and in the society in general, is something that probably all of us have noticed. The mining industry is no exception to this trend, and there exists a vision of having completely automated mines with all processes monitored and controlled through a higher level optimization goal.
