  1. 1. Programmed Cell Death in Xylem Development

    Author : Laetitia Charleen Courtois-Moreau; Hannele Tuominen; Stefan Jansson; Christina Dixelius; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PCD Programmed Cell Death ; Xylem; Apoptosis; Autophagy; Secondary Cell Walls; Microscopy; Microarrays; Comet Assay; TUNEL Assay; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Concerns about climate changes and scarcity of fossil fuels are rising. Hence wood is becoming an attractive source of renewable energy and raw material and these new dimensions have prompted increasing interest in wood formation in trees, in both the scientific community and wider public. 2. 2. Xylem cells cooperate in the control of lignification and cell death during plant vascular development

    Author : Sacha Escamez; Hannele Tuominen; Andrew Groover; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Xylem; Arabidopsis; programmed cell death; tracheary element; xylem vessel; autophagy; metacaspase; lignin; secondary cell wall; chromatin; gene expression;

    Abstract : The evolutionary success of land plants was fostered by the acquisition of the xylem vascular tissue which conducts water and minerals upwards from the roots. The xylem tissue of flowering plants is composed of three main types of cells: the sap-conducting tracheary elements (TE), the fibres which provide mechanical support and the parenchyma cells which provide metabolic support to the tissue. 3. 3. Novel insights into vacuole-mediated control of plant growth and immunity

    Author : Qinsong Liu; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Plant vacuoles are organelles with numerous biological functions in growth, development, and stress responses. These include maintenance of turgor pressure, storage of minerals and proteins, and degradation of cellular content delivered by endosomal trafficking and autophagy pathways. READ MORE

  4. 4. Living through hard times: Dispose of or sequester? Plant subcellular strategies for stress resilience

    Author : Pernilla Elander; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Extreme weather events have become the new normal due to climate change and global warming. This damages crop harvests, threatening global food production. One of the many measures to ensure food security is to develop stress-resilient plants, but to do that we need to understand how plants respond to stress factors. READ MORE
