11. Sutures bridging nerve defects
Abstract : A new and simple method for the repair of nerve defects, in which sutures alone are used to guide regeneration between the nerve endings, was developed. Bilateral seven to 17 mm rat sciatic nerve defects were bridged by continuous longitudinal sutures with or without different modifications, by conventional autologous nerve grafts or direct repair under tension as controls. 12. Identification of Candidate Genes in Four Human Disorders
Abstract : The aim of this thesis has been to identify genes and gene regions underlying four different disorders. In papers I-IV, positional cloning methods, such as linkage, association and haplotype analysis have been used for the identification of genomic regions associated with the ichthyosis prematurity syndrome (IPS), adult-onset autosomal dominant leukodystrophy (ADLD) and Kostmann disease. 13. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and endocannabinoid functions in gabaergic interneuron development
Abstract : Formation of the cerebral cortex is controlled by tightly regulated processes: the proliferation and survival decisions of neural progenitors, radial and tangential migration of neuronal precursors, axon guidance and dendritic growth underpinning the formation of synapses. Patterning of the neocortex has been extensively studied and significant progress has been made in understanding the principles of cortical neuronal circuit formation. READ MORE

14. White matter connections : developmental neuroimaging studies of the associations between genes, brain and behavior
Abstract : Development of cognitive abilities across childhood and adulthood parallels brain maturation in typically developing samples. Cognitive abilities such as reading and working memory have been linked to neuroimaging measures in relevant brain regions. READ MORE

15. Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Tractography of the Visual Pathways
Abstract : The visual pathways are essential for human vision, stretching from the retinas of the eyes, via the anterior visual pathways and the optic radiations, to the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobe. Injury to these structures will lead to visual impairment – from small deficits to blindness. READ MORE
