  1. 1. Genetic Analysis of Fat Metabolism in Domestic Pigs and their Wild Ancestor

    Author : Frida Berg; Leif Andersson; Maria Moller; Stefan Marklund; Sigbjörn Lien; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Genetics; Pig; Quantitative Trait Locus; Fat deposition; FAT1; Linkage map; RH map; Comparative map; Backcross; Identical by Descent mapping; Brown adipose tissue; UCP1; Genetik;

    Abstract : The domestication of the pig began about 9 000 years ago and many of the existing domestic breeds have been selected for phenotypic traits like lean meat and fast growth. Domestic pigs are phenotypically very different from the ancestral wild boar that has adapted to survive in their natural environment. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genetic analysis of murine malaria

    Author : Susana Campino; Dan Holmberg; Nils Lycke; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Malaria; genetic analysis; Plasmodium; wild derived inbred strains; loci; cerebral malaria; hyperparasitaemia.; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; genetik; Genetics;

    Abstract : Malaria, an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites, is one of the major world-scale health problems. Despite the efforts aimed at finding an effective way to control the disease, the success has been thwarted by the emergence of parasite drug resistance and mosquito resistance to insecticides. 3. 3. Reduced ROS production triggers arthritis / The role of T cells in arthritis pathogenesis

    Author : Jens Holmberg; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Spleen and lymph nodes Inflammation Reactive oxygen species T cells MHC; serology; Immunology; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis is to defend a novel mechanism that triggers arthritis susceptibility in both rats and mice through reduced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), but also to introduce a novel model for chronic relapsing arthritis. Five papers are included, all of which employ animal models for rheumatoid arthritis and one that also uses animal models for multiple sclerosis. READ MORE
