    Abstract : Catalytic systems are one of the most effective technologies of modern chemical processes. The system uses a molecule called ‘catalyst’ that is capable of catalyzing a reaction without being produced or consumed during the process. READ MORE

  2. 2. Beta-glucose 1-phosphate interconverting enzymes in Lactococcus lactis: physiological role and regulation in maltose, trehalose and glucose metabolism

    Author : Ulrika Andersson; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; Biochemical technology; Biokemisk teknik; bacteriology; Microbiology; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; trehalose 6-phosphate phosphorylase; beta-phosphoglucomutase; maltose phosphorylase; glucose; trehalose; maltose; Lactococcus lactis; beta-glucose 1-phosphate;

    Abstract : Lactic acid bacteria (LAB), including Lactococcus lactis, are abundant in nature. These bacteria convert carbohydrates into mainly lactate by a rather uncomplicated metabolism. An improved understanding of the physiological and genetical mechanisms involved in carbohydrate metabolism and its regulation will improve the industrial use of LAB. READ MORE

  3. 3. Denitrification as an adaptive trait in soil and groundwater bacteria

    Author : Christer Bergwall; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microcosm; forest soil; aquifer; groundwater; reductase; nitrous oxide; nitric oxide; nitrite; nitrate; selection; adaptation; bacteria; nitrification; Denitrification; dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium; fertiliser; 15NO3-; 15NH4 ; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : The focus of the thesis is on selection and adaptation processes in bacteria with emphasis on denitrifying bacteria in groundwater. Other nitrogen transformation processes such as dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (nitrate ammonification) and nitrification of forest soil bacteria are briefly discussed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Electrochemical (bio-)sensors operating in human physiological fluids

    Author : Carolin Psotta; Sergey Shleev; Magnus Falk; Evgeny Katz; Malmö universitet; []
    Keywords : biosensor; bacteria; enzyme; sensor; physiological fluid;

    Abstract : This thesis is focused on developing electrochemical (bio-)sensors specifically designed to detect biomolecules and bacteria in human physiological fluids. A more comprehensive understanding of their performance can be obtained by exposing the sensors to real human physiological fluids. READ MORE

  5. 5. Interactions between metals and bacteria : Importance for metal speciation

    Author : Lena Brynhildsen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the interactions between metals and microorganisms with respect to* Toxicity of metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Zn)* Mineralization of metal-organic complexes (citric acid, histidine)* Metal adsorption (Cs, Sr, Eu, Hg, Zn, As)Most of the studies were made on the gram-negative bacterium Klebsiella oxytoca, but the work also involved a Serratia as as well as mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil systems.Most previous studies, reported in the literature, on the toxic effects of metals on microorganisms have been performed at high nutrient levels, despite the fact that microorganisms in nature normally live under energy-limited conditions.
