  1. 1. Antibiotic resistance gone wild : A One Health perspective on carriage, selection and transmission of Extended-Spectrum Cephalosporinase- and Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae

    Author : Clara Atterby; Josef D. Järhult; Nicola Williams; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; E. coli; K. pneumoniae; ESBL; AmpC; Carbapenemase; ciprofloxacin resistance; colistin resistance; rural; wildlife; birds; sub-MIC; MSC; Cambodia; environment; epidemiology; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Antibiotics have saved millions of lives since they came into clinical use during the Second World War in the 1940s. Today, our effective use of antibiotics is under great threat due to emerging antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This thesis addresses the problems of antibiotic resistance from a ”One Health” perspective. READ MORE

  2. 2. Dissemination of Multiresistant Bacteria : Their Selection, Transmission, Virulence and Resistance

    Author : Gustaf Starlander; Åsa Melhus; Jørgen Vildershøj Bjørnholt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Klinisk bakteriologi; Clinical Bacteriology;

    Abstract : Multiresistant bacteria are an emerging threat in modern medicine. Consumption of antimicrobial agents among humans, animals and in agriculture causes a selection of resistance genes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Multi-Resistance Plasmids : Fitness Costs, Dynamics and Evolution

    Author : Fredrika Rajer; Linus Sandegren; Pål Jarle Johnsen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multi-resistance plasmids; evolution; fitness cost; dynamics; escherichia coli; ESBL; gene amplification; β-lactamase inhibitor; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : Antibiotic resistance is an escalating problem, not only due to less desirable treatment options and outcome, but also due to the economic burden to health care caused by resistant pathogens. Since the process of developing new antibiotics is slow, we need to carefully consider the usage of the antibiotics still available. READ MORE

  4. 4. Porphyrins and heme in microorganisms : Porphyrin content and its relation to phototherapy and antimicrobial treatments in vivo and in vitro

    Author : Jonas Fyrestam; Conny Östman; Jonas Bergquist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Porphyrins; heme; phototherapy; antimicrobial resistance; singlet oxygen; photosensitizer; bacteria; HPLC-MS MS; oral bacteria; Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans; Porphyromonas gingivalis; Escherichia coli; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Abstract : One of the greatest threats to human health is increasing antimicrobial resistance among pathogens, and finding alternatives for treatment of bacterial infections is of highest importance together with a more controlled use of antibiotics. Porphyrins and heme have both been shown to be a promising class of compounds for inactivation of bacteria; porphyrins by their excellent properties to act as a photosensitizer, and heme by its importance as an iron source during a bacterial infection in vertebrates. 5. 5. Aspects of Bacterial Resistance to Silver

    Author : Susanne Sütterlin; Åsa Melhus; Björn Olsen; Roland Möllby; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Antimicrobial resistance; Silver resistance; Clinical Bacteriology; Klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has increased rapidly within recent years, and it has become a serious threat to public health. Infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria entail higher morbidity, mortality, and a burden to health care systems. READ MORE
