  1. 1. Fermentation of lignocellulosic material : a study on bacterial contamination and yeast physiology

    Author : Emma Johansson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast physiology; energy metabolism; Lignocellulosic bioethanol; bacterial contamination;

    Abstract : Progressive depletion of oil and conventional fossil fuels, an increased energy demand and an increased struggle for national energy security has led to the development of alternative biobased fuels, bioethanol being one of them. Bioethanol can be made from many different raw materials, and based upon this are classified as 1st generation and 2nd generation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microbenthos under Pressure : Impacts of human activities on bacteria and meiofauna communities in Baltic soft sediments

    Author : Sven Iburg; Francisco J. A. Nascimento; Owen Wangensteen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; soft sediments; benthic ecosystems; anthropogenic disturbance; contamination; recreational boating; bottom trawling; meiofauna; bacteria; metabarcoding; Baltic Sea; mjuka sediment; bentiska ekosystem; antropogenisk påverkan; förorening; fritidsbåtar; bottentrålning; meiofauna; bakterier; metabarcoding; Östersjön; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Abstract : The marine benthic zone is one of the largest habitats on the planet, harbouring a large diversity of life that underpin many important ecological processes. However, these habitats have been under growing stress from human activities, profoundly altering their living communities. READ MORE

  3. 3. Application of two dimensional compound specific carbon-chlorine isotope analyses for degradation monitoring and assessment of organic pollutants in contaminated soil and groundwater

    Author : Charline Wiegert; Örjan Gustafsson; Thomas Hofstetter; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organochlorines; chlorinated ethenes; PCE; TCE; hexachlorocyclohexanes; soil contamination; groundwater contamination; remediation; natural attenuation; biodegradation; carbon isotopes; chlorine isotopes; CSIA; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Nearly 250,000 sites with past and present potentially polluting activities need urgent remediation within Europe. Major pollutants include organochlorines (OCls), e.g. chlorinated ethenes (CEs) and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), mainly used as industrial solvents and pesticides, respectively. READ MORE

  4. 4. Adhesion Mechanisms of Bacterial Spores to Solid Surfaces

    Author : Ulrika Husmark; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The initial adhesion of different Bacillus spores to solid surfaces was investigated. By changing environmental parameters and studying the subsequent adhesion, conclusions have been drawn concerning the different mechanisms responsible for adhesion. Bacillus species are common microorganisms and in food industry they are common food spoilers. READ MORE

  5. 5. "Under pressure" : interaction between pharmaceuticals and river bacteria

    Author : Aleksandra Hagberg; Madeleine Ramstedt; Mette Burmølle; Jerker Fick; Rikke Louise Meyer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biofilms; river bacteria; pharmaceutical contamination;

    Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are often entering the environment without being completely decomposed. Once released in the environment they continue to carry on their main function but instead targeting the inhabitants of the aquatic ecosystem. Our interest was drawn towards the bacteria, that are often present in the environment in the form of biofilms. READ MORE
