  1. 1. Boreal Lake Sediments as Sources and Sinks of Carbon

    Author : Cristian Gudasz; Tranvik Lars; David Bastviken; Susan Ziegler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; boreal lakes; allochthonous; lake sediments; sediment mineralization; bacterial production; bacterial biomass; carbon cycle; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi; Limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Inland waters process large amounts of organic carbon, contributing to CO2 and CH4 emissions, as well as storing organic carbon (OC) over geological timescales. Recently, it has been shown that the magnitude of these processes is of global significance. READ MORE

  2. 2. Primary Marine Aerosol Production : Studies using bubble-bursting experiments

    Author : Kim Hultin; Douglas Nilsson; Radovan Krejci; Ian Cousins; Åke Hagström; Erik Swietlicki; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : sea spray; water temperature; dissolved oxygen; photosynthesis; bacterial emissions; V-TDMA; mixing state; eddy covariance; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : Aerosol particles affect the Earth’s climate, although their impact is associated with large uncertainties. Primary marine aerosol represents a significant fraction of the global aerosol budget considering the Earth’s 70-percentage coverage by oceans. READ MORE

  3. 3. A rockwool biofilter for the treatment of restaurant emissions

    Author : Anneli Andersson-Chan; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering;

    Abstract : Over the past 20 years, the use of biological air pollution control has become a popular treatment alternative for contaminated gas streams. The objective of this licentiate thesis was to investigate the feasibility of a compact rockwool biofilter to treat emissions from a restaurant, to identify an appropriate microbial population for the inoculation of the biofilter, and suitable environmental conditions for this culture. 4. 4. Nitrification and Nitrifying Bacterial Communities in Coniferous Forest Soils : Effects of Liming and Clear-Cutting

    Author : Jenny Bäckman; Wietse de Boer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the effects of liming and clear-cutting on nitrification in hemi-boreal and northern temperate coniferous forest soils. The approach has been to study both the potential nitrification and the community structure of the ammonia-oxidising bacteria, which carry out the first step of autotrophic nitrification. READ MORE

  5. 5. Riverine sources of bioreactive macroelements and their impact on bacterioplankton metabolism in a recipient boreal estuary

    Author : Ana Soares; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : Dissolved organic carbon; DOC bioreactivity; nutrient bioavailability; dissolved organic matter; bacterioplankton production; bacterial respiration; aquatic ecology;

    Abstract : The loading of terrestrially derived macroelements, such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (N), and total phosphorus (P), to inland and estuarine waters is increasing in the northern hemisphere. Thesemacroelements often limit heterotrophic bacterioplankton metabolism (production and respiration), which in turn influence food web structures, exchange of greenhouse gases between the atmosphere and aquatic systems and oxygen consumption in estuarine ecosystems.
