6. Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms
Abstract : The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). READ MORE

7. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides
Abstract : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). 8. Immunological aspects on cystic fibrosis lung disease
Abstract : In cystic fibrosis (CF) colonization of the airways with Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a major cause of deterioration and death. Host defence fails to clear the invading bacteria, which results in a chronic destructive inflammatory process. READ MORE

9. Nitrite ion : its role in vasoregulation and host defenses
Abstract : Nitrite and nitrate are distributed throughout the human body, with especially high levels being present in saliva. Until recently, these anions were considered merely to be inert end-products of the oxidation of endogenous nitric oxide (NO). READ MORE

10. Complement-dependent defence against bacterial infection. Studies in C2 deficiency
Abstract : The complement system is critically involved in defence against bacterial infection. C2 deficiency is, apart from mannan-binding lectin (MBL) deficiency, the most common homozygous complement deficiency among Caucasians. READ MORE
