11. Lactobacillus in semi-hard cheese and their use as adjunct cultures
Abstract : The microflora of Herrgård cheese produced at three dairies was compared after three and six months maturation. The microflora of cheeses from two of the dairies was dominated by a spontaneous microflora of Lactobacillus after three months of ripening, while starter bacteria still dominated in cheese from the third dairy after six months. 12. Surface proteins of pathogenic streptococci
Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) and the group B streptococcus (GBS) are two important human pathogens that cause different types of diseases and express different surface structures implicated in virulence. This thesis focuses on several surface proteins expressed by these pathogens, analyzing the biological function of these proteins and their ability to elicit protective immunity. READ MORE

13. Genes for cytochrome c and cytochrome c oxidase synthesis in Bacillus subtilis
Abstract : Cytochromes are heme-containing proteins that function in electron transfer reactions, e.g. respiration and photosynthesis. There are several different types of cytochromes. READ MORE

14. New innovative methods for non-intrusive optical diagnostics of high-voltage insulator materials
Abstract : The purpose of this PhD thesis work has been to develop optical techniques that can help utility engineers for assessing the state of insulators in service and in a laboratory. The possibilities to use remote laser induced fluorescence for detection and imaging of biological growth such as algae and fungi have been investigated. READ MORE

15. Molecular analysis of Streptococcus pyogenes and its interactions with the human host
Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes causes infections only in humans, from trivial tonsillitis to life-threatening conditions. One of its most important virulence factors is the M-like protein family conferring resistance to phagocytosis to the bacterium. The M-like proteins are surface exposed rod-like molecules attached to the cell wall. Each strain of S. READ MORE
