  1. 1. Effects of environmental acoustic factors, individual differences and musical training on speech perception in simulated classrooms

    Author : Douglas MacCutcheon; Robert Ljung; Daniel Västfjäll; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; speech in noise; cognition; perception; musical training; spatial listening; virtual classroom environment; bakgrundsljud; kognition; taluppfattning; musikalisk träning; rumsligt lyssnande; virtuella klassrumsmiljöer; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development;

    Abstract : Formal learning takes place primarily through speech perception in classroom environments and is therefore dependent on the listener’s ability to cope with a number of acoustic factors that interfere with the speech signal. As classrooms are inclusive spaces accommodating learners with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds, this research investigated some of the ways in which individual differences in supporting cognitive skills are related to speech perception outcomes in various challenging acoustic environments. 2. 2. Cognition in Hearing Aid Users : Memory for Everyday Speech

    Author : Hoi Ning Elaine Ng; Jerker Rönnberg; Mary Rudner; Thomas Lunner; Kevin Munro; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Hearing aid; working memory; free recall; noise reduction; speech recognition; Hörapparat; arbetsminne; återgivning; brusreducering; taluppfattning;

    Abstract : The thesis investigated the importance of cognition for speech understanding in experienced and new hearing aid users. The aims were 1) to develop a cognitive test (Sentence-final Word Identification and Recall, or SWIR test) to measure the effects of a noise reduction algorithm on processing of highly intelligible speech (everyday sentences); 2) to investigate, using the SWIR test, whether hearing aid signal processing would affect memory for heard speech in experienced hearing aid users; 3) to test whether the effects of signal processing on the ability to recall speech would interact with background noise and individual differences in working memory capacity; 4) to explore the potential clinical application of the SWIR test; and 5) to examine the relationship between cognition and speech recognition in noise in new users over the first six months of hearing aid use. 3. 3. Neural and Cognitive Effects of Hearing Loss on Speech Processing

    Author : Eline Borch Petersen; Thomas Lunner; Stefan Stenfelt; Jonas Obleser; Edmund Lalor; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hearing loss; speech processing; electroencephalogram EEG; working memory; cognitive load; hearing aid; Hörselnedsättning; bearbetning av tal; elektroencefalogram EEG; arbetsminne; kognitiv belastning; hörapparat;

    Abstract : Understanding speech in the presence of noise can be difficult, especially when suffering from a hearing loss. This thesis examined behavioural and electrophysiological measures of speech processing with the aim of establishing how they were influenced by hearing loss (internal degradation) and listening condition (external degradation). Abstract : Age affects hearing and cognitive abilities. Older people, with and without hearing impairment (HI), exhibit difficulties in hearing speech in noise. READ MORE

  5. 5. Control and Communication with Signal-to-Noise Ratio Constraints

    Author : Erik Johannesson; Institutionen för reglerteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Real-time coding; SNR; Causal coding; AWN channel; AWGN channel; Remote source; Networked control; Control over channel; Convex optimization; Wiener filter;

    Abstract : This thesis is about two problems in the intersection of communication and control theory. Their common feature is that they involve communication over an additive white noise channel with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) constraint. The first problem concerns the transmission of a real-valued signal from a partially observed Markov source. READ MORE
