  1. 1. Calibration and quality assessment of DESCARTES : grabsampler for stratospheric tracers

    Author : Johan Arvelius; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adsorption; Balloon; Carboxen; CFC; Chloro-Fluoro Carbon; Grab sampling; Halocarbon; Molecular sieve; Stratospheric tracer; Tracer; Adsorption; Ballong; Carboxen; CFC; Halogeniserade kolväten; Klor-Flourkarbon; Spårgas; Stratosfärisk spårgas; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Abstract : DESCARTES is a light-weight, balloon-borne grab sampler for stratospheric long-lived tracers developed at the University of Cambridge. 33 flights have been performed with two versions of the instrument at northern latitudes by the DESCARTES team at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) in Kiruna during the years 1997-2000. 2. 2. Life situation in people with peripheral arterial disease and their family members

    Author : Louise Egberg; Anne-Cathrine Mattiasson; Johan Styrud; Karl-Gösta Ljungström; Sissel Andreassen; Berit Lundman; Sophiahemmet Högskola; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Peripheral vascular disease; Experiences; Angioplasty; balloon; Health related quality of life; Life situation; Family members; Peripheral Vascular Disease;

    Abstract : Life with peripheral arterial disease and the resulting impaired walking ability leads to major limitations in daily life and a decreased quality of life. The overall aim of this thesis was to generate understanding about the life situation among people living with peripheral arterial disease and their family members. READ MORE

  3. 3. Percutaneous Balloon Compression for the Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia

    Author : Pär Asplund; A. Tommy Bergenheim; Patric Blomstedt; Marc Sindou; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; trigeminal neuralgia; multiple sclerosis; surgery; percutaneous balloon compression; percutaneous retrogasserian glycerol rhizolysis; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Background. Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a paroxysmal unilateral facial pain condition. That it is rather rare is of little comfort to those who are affected, as TN is often described as one of the worst pains known to mankind. Advanced age and multiple sclerosis (MS) are risk factors for developing TN. READ MORE

  4. 4. Computer Aided Angioplasty : Patient-specific arterial modeling and smooth 3D contact analysis of the stent-balloon-artery interaction

    Author : Dimitrios Kiousis; Gerhard Holzapfel; Kenneth Runesson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Contact; continuous surfaces; B-splines; balloon angioplasty; stenting; FEM; Bioengineering; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : Paper A: In this paper, the development and implementation of a contact algorithm based on C2-continuous surface representations is discussed. In 3D contact simulations involving models with arbitrarily curved surfaces (as in the case of vessel walls), the discretization of the contact surfaces by means of facet-based techniques could lead to numerical instabilities and finally loss of quadratic convergence. 5. 5. Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a balloon catheter : experimental and clinical evaluation of a new form of treatment for menorrhagia

    Author : Britt Friberg; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; andrologi; Obstetrik; gynekologi; sexuality; gynaecology; andrology; reproduction; Obstetrics; balloon catheter; thermal coagulation; Menorrhagia; endometrial destruction; saline infusion sonography; uterine thermal conductivity; reproduktion; sexualitet;

    Abstract : Thermal endometrial destruction by means of a silicone balloon catheter is a new form of treatment for menorrhagia aimed at reducing menstrual blood loss. The purpose of the present work was to study, experimentally, the thermal effects on and the thermal conductivity of uterine tissue, to obtain a basis for the estimation of optimal treatment conditions by means of numerical analyses using a computer simulation model, to elucidate possible problems which may arise during the procedure, to evaluate how the patients tolerated this treatment and to judge which patients were suitable for this form of treatment and, finally, to study the uterine cavity after treatment and the long-term results of treatment.
