  1. 1. Baltic Sea sediments : Source and sink for metal contamination

    Author : Sina Shahabi-Ghahfarokhi; João Marcelo Ketzer; Alessandro Amorosi; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Baltic Sea; sediments; acid sulfate soil; metal; remediation; reoxygenation; X-ray absorption spectroscopy; Environmental Chemistry; Miljökemi; Miljövetenskap; Environmental Science;

    Abstract : The Baltic Sea sediments record spatial and temporal information about metalsand metalloids (hereafter referred to as metals), which could help to understandthe past and present contamination sinks in different basins. In addition, giventhe expanding anoxic zones in the Baltic Sea, the response of metals to artificialreoxygenation is poorly understood. READ MORE

  2. 2. Ancient genomics of Baltic seals : Insights on the past Baltic grey seal and harp seal populations

    Author : Maiken Hemme Bro-Jørgensen; Kerstin Lidén; Morten Tange Olsen; Aikaterini Glykou; Olle Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Ancient DNA; Baltic Sea; DNA preservation; extinction; mitogenome; seal hunting; sex identification; arkeologi med inriktning mot laborativ arkeologi; Scientific Archaeology;

    Abstract : This thesis aims to study and describe the ancient populations of grey and harp seals in the Baltic Sea, and to present new methodological approaches for general use in ancient DNA studies.The dissertation is comprised of five studies: a review of the use of paleogenetics in studying ancient human-marine mammal interactions; a method paper investigating patterns of DNA preservation in ancient pinniped samples; a method paper presenting a genetic sex identification method for ancient pinnipeds; a population genomic study of the Baltic grey seal; and a population genomic study of the now extinct Baltic harp seal. 3. 3. Baltic Sea from Space : The use of ocean colour data to improve our understanding of ecological drivers across the Baltic Sea basin – algorithm development, validation and ecological applications

    Author : Dmytro Kyryliuk; Susanne Kratzer; Steve W. Lyon; Michelle McCrackin; Koponen Sampsa; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ocean Colour; MERIS; OLCI; water quality; marine ecology; coastal areas; Baltic Sea; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Coastal areas are the most densely populated areas in the world and thus are under immense anthropogenic pressure. To ensure their function and ecological role, coastal areas require continuous monitoring and management. The rapidly emerging field of satellite remote sensing provides a unique opportunity to monitor both land and oceans from Space. READ MORE

  5. 5. Freshwater, density gradients and biological processes in cold, brackish seas : aspects of the biogeophysical fluid dynamics characterising the Baltic Sea

    Author : Tapani Stipa; Peter Haugan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Östersjön; Oceanografi; meteorologi; Meteorology;

    Abstract : The dominant component in the ocean water is freshwater. In this thesis its mixing and the freshwater-induced dynamics are discussed, with cold, brackish basins such as the Baltic Sea especially in mind. A mathematical framework is derived to allow for a consistent way of adding freshwater effects to the governing equations. READ MORE
