21. Photodynamic therapy and laser-based diagnostic studies of malignant tumours
Abstract : Two non-thermal regimens of light interaction with biological tissue, that are in a natural way connected, are discussed in the present thesis. These are photodynamic therapy (PDT) for the treatment of malignant tumours and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) for tissue characterization. READ MORE

22. Molecular alterations in squamous cell carcinomas of the skin : emphasis on genes on chromosome 9q
Abstract : Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the western world. The incidence of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer is continuously increasing and, in Sweden, 2300 new cases per year are diagnosed of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) alone. READ MORE

23. Oxidative stress in cell and tissue damage and selenium-based therapeutics in cancer
Abstract : Redox homeostasis is the balance between cellular prooxidants and antioxidants, maintained by the interplay of electrons. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a term for molecules with unpaired valence electrons or unstable bonds. READ MORE

24. Molecular complexities of patched signaling in cancer development
Abstract : Basal Cell Cancer (BCC) is the most common cancer in the Western world. Although BCCs hardly ever metastasize, invasive growth may cause considerable local tissue destruction. BCCs mainly occur as sporadic tumors but can also be found in a hereditary form in the Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCCS). READ MORE

25. Analysis of human epidermal Langerhans' cells and allergens with confocal laser scanning microscopy
Abstract : The aim of the thesis was to explore confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) as a tool for 1) quantitative and 3-dimensional (3-D) analysis of the human antigen-presenting Langerhans' cell (LC) in epidermis and 2) for localization of allergens in yeast cells and in birch pollen. Epidermal LCs were investigated after occlusion with patch tests and in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) skin. READ MORE
