1. Ground Movements in the Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt of SW Iran Measured by GPS and InSAR Compared to Physical Models
Abstract : This thesis uses geodetic satellite data to measure present-day crustal deformation in the Zagros fold-thrust belt (SW Iran). Geodetic-type measurements are also used in down-scaled models that simulate the surface deformations seen in convergent settings like the Zagros fold-thrust belt. READ MORE

2. On the Mechanisms behind the Tribological Performance of Stellites
Abstract : This thesis reveals the tribological mechanisms behind the intrinsic low friction potential of the Co-based family of alloys called Stellites. Although being an established and important group of materials, a satisfactory explanation to why they exhibit low-friction properties under severe sliding conditions has not previously been found in the literature. 3. MAX phase thin films : unique multifunctional ceramics with the elements Ti, Si, Ge, Sn, and C
Abstract : Mn+1AXn phases are ternary carbides or nitrides (X) consisting of an early transition metal (M), and (A)- group element (group III-V). They combine ceramic and metallic properties with high oxidation and thermal shock resistance as well as low resistivity. READ MORE

4. Fullerene-like carbon nitride thin solid films
Abstract : The subject of this thesis is to establish synthesis-structure-property- performance relations for nano structured carbon nitride thin solid films. This material consists of bent and frequently intersecting nitrogen-containing graphite basal planes, where nitrogen plays an important role for the initiation of inter-planar cross-links and the induction of curvature via pentagon formation, much like in Buckminster Fullerenes - hence, the terminology "fullerene-like carbon nitride". 5. Carbon Nitride : Characterization and Protein Interactions
Abstract : This thesis concerns synthesis and characterization of carbon-based materials and theinvestigation of the possible use, of a selection of these materials, in biomedicalapplications. Protein adsorption and blood plasma tests were used for this purposeutilizing a surface sensitive technique called spectroscopic ellipsometry. READ MORE
