  1. 1. Progesterone metabolites : learning, tolerance, antagonism & metabolism

    Author : Charlotte Öfverman; Inga-Maj Johansson; Torbjörn Bäckström; Esa Korpi; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allopregnanolone; isoallopregnanolone; THDOC; learning; tolerance; antagonism; inhibition; patch clamp; Morris water maze; metabolism; epimerization; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi; obstetrik och gynekologi; Obstetrics and Gynaecology;

    Abstract : Progesterone metabolites as allopregnanolone, isoallopregnanolone and tetrahydrodeoxy-corticosterone (THDOC) are increased in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, throughout pregnancy and during stress. Allopregnanolone and THDOC are neurosteroids with 3α-hydroxy, 5α-configurations and positive modulating effect on the GABAA receptor. READ MORE

  2. 2. Leptin and the Intersection of Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolism, and Adipose Tissue

    Author : Camilla Vavruch; Fredrik Nyström; Carl Johan Östgren; Johan Ärnlöv; Kristina Boström; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Leptin; Type 2 diabetes mellitus; Adipose tissue; Cardiovascular disease; Metabolism; Cardiovascular risk factors;

    Abstract : According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, and it is the leading cause of death worldwide. The risk factors for CVD are divided into two major classes: non-modifiable (age, gender, family history) and modifiable (including tobacco use, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, dyslipidemia, and stress). 3. 3. Dissolved organic matter in lakes : Chemical diversity and continuum of reactivity

    Author : Alina Mostovaya; Lars Tranvik; Colin Stedmon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : dissolved organic matter; DOM; dissolved organic carbon; DOC; PARAFAC; reactivity continuum model; ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry; FT-ICR-MS; organic matter characterization; decomposition kinetics; baseline metabolism; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Abstract : Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the largest pool of organic carbon in aquatic systems and an important component of the global carbon cycle. Large amounts of DOM are decomposed within lakes, resulting in fluxes of CO2 and CH4 to the atmosphere. READ MORE

  4. 4. Methodological aspects on microdialysis sampling and measurements

    Author : Pernilla Abrahamsson; Ola Winsö; Michael Haney; Anna-Maja Åberg; Urban Ungerstedt; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microdialysis; liver ischemia; heart ischemia; epicardium; liver parenchyma; CMA 600; metabolism; Anaesthetics and intensive care; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; anestesiologi; Anaesthesiology;

    Abstract : Background:     The microdialysis (MD) technique is widely spread and used both experimentally and in clinical practice. The MD technique allows continuous collection of small molecules such as glucose, lactate, pyruvate and glycerol. Samples are often analysed using the CMA 600 analyser, an enzymatic and colorimetric analyser. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cardiac lipids and their role in the diseased heart

    Author : Ismena Mardani; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiovascular disease; Lipid droplets; Perilipins; Lipid accumulation; Metabolism; GlcCer;

    Abstract : Lipids play an essential role within the heart as they are involved in energy storage, membrane stability and signaling. Changes in cardiac lipid composition and utilization may thus have profound effects on cardiac function. Importantly, the diseased heart is associated with intracellular metabolic abnormalities, including accumulation of lipids. READ MORE
