  1. 1. Feathers by day, membranes by night - Aerodynamic performance in bird and bat flight

    Author : Florian Muijres; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; animal flight; aerodynamics; vortex wake; actuator disk; flight performance; span efficiency; bird; bat; wind tunnel; PIV; Pied Flycatcher; Glossophaga soricina; Leptonycteris yerbabuenae;

    Abstract : The efficiency and performance of a flying animal is directly related to the aerodynamics around its body and flapping wings. Here, I have developed methods for quantifying the wake dynamics around a flying animal. The results are used to estimate the aerodynamic performance of flapping flight. READ MORE

  2. 2. Aerodynamic performance in bat flight

    Author : Jonas Håkansson; Evolutionär ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Leptonycteris yerbabuenae; Plecotus auritus; Glossophaga soricina; PIV; aerodynamics; wing morphology; bats; wind tunnel; animal flight;

    Abstract : Bats are the only mammals capable of flight, and they are the only animal flyers that are mammals. This thesis focuses on the latter of those facts, and investigates how bats fly, from an aerodynamic perspective. READ MORE

  3. 3. Energy flow and metabolic efficiency attributed to brown adipose tissue

    Author : Gabriella von Essen; Jan Nedergaard; Susanne Klaus; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brown adipose tissue; BAT; UCP1; diet-induced thermogenesis; DIT; obesity; high-fat diet; energy expenditure; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : The large capacity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) to expend energy as heat makes it an interesting potential player in weight regulation and other metabolic conditions. This is of particular interest as it has been recognized that adult humans possess BAT. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bone Morphogenetic Protein 4 regulates white, beige and brown adipose tissue

    Author : Jenny M Hoffmann; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; BMP4; Browning; WAT; BAT; insulin sensitivity;

    Abstract : Obesity and its associated complications, including Type 2 diabetes, are increasing at an epidemic rate globally. Adipose tissue exerts different functions and is central in energy homeostasis, and it consists of white, beige or brown adipocytes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Four Essays on Technology, Productivity and Environment

    Author : Jan Larsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; BAT; DEA; Dynamic factor demand; Efficiency; Emission; Environmental regulation; Multiproduct symmetric generalized McFadden cost function; Malmquist index; Mexico; NAFTA; Norwegian manufacturing; Productivity; Trade liberalisation;

    Abstract : The main subject of this thesis is the relationship between economic growth and environmental effects when the interaction between firms' behaviour and regulations are taken into account. In the first three papers I discuss different aspects of the relationship between regulations and environmental effects. READ MORE
