  1. 1. Bacterial Degradation and Use of Chitin in Aquatic Habitats

    Author : Sara Beier; Stefan Bertilsson; Ian Head; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chitin; organic matter degradation; microbial ecology; functional guild; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Chitin belongs to the most abundant biopolymers on earth where it has an important role as a structural element in crustaceans, insects, fungi and some phytoplankton. Missing evidence for long-term accumulation of chitin in nature implies fast turnover and as chitin is composed of aminosugar subunits it holds central roles in both carbon and nitrogen cycles. 2. 2. Habitat selection and indirect interactions in fish communities : mechanisms to explain spatial distribution of perch, roach, and vendace

    Author : Ulrika Beier; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : To increase the understanding of freshwater lake ecosystems, I have studied the habitat selection of perch (Perca fluviatilis L.), roach (Rutilus rutilus (L.)), and vendace (Coregonus albula (L.)). READ MORE

  3. 3. Habitat use in fish communities : size- and environment-dependent mechanisms affecting biotic interactions and population regulation

    Author : Ulrika Beier; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Through the influence of abiotic factors, the habitat use of organisms affects their metabolism as well as other species- and size-dependent individual-based rates. The habitat-specific performances of individuals interacting in different habitats thereby affect biotic interactions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Phylogeny and Taxonomy of Subfamily Zygophylloideae (Zygophyllaceae) with Special Reference to the Genus Fagonia

    Author : Björn-Axel Beier; Mats Thulin; Brian Schrire; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Phylogeny; Taxonomy; Zygophylloideae; Fagonia; Biogeography; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Members of Zygophylloideae are shrubs, shrublets and herbs of arid and semiarid areas of almost all continents, and many of the species are major components of the vegetation in their areas of distribution. A phylogenetic analysis of Zygophylloideae based on noncoding trnL plastid DNA sequences and morphological data, indicates that the currently recognised genera Augea, Tetraena, and Fagonia, are embedded in Zygophyllum. 5. 5. Tacit : A research journey into the methods, processes and knowledge of graphic designers

    Author : Halldór Björn Halldórsson; Åsa Wikberg-Nilsson; Anders Warell; Johanna Lewengard; Sofie Beier; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Design; Design;

    Abstract : By exploring the potential effects of digitisation on graphic design methods, this thesis aims to highlight some of the tacit knowledge possessed by graphic designers and to show that this knowledge can both be externalised and made communicable. Beginning with an interview study where professional designers’ views were gathered and analysed, the work continued through a participatory study where designers’ knowledge was highlighted in a documented design project.
